We saw a store located at the beginning of Gran Via called Stock 40. The store's name did not mean anything to me but I liked the classic style clothing in the window display. We walked in and I immediately liked everything I saw. Classic styles, classic colours, good cut, good fabric, these were the clothes that would fit almost all occasions. I looked at the prices. Wow, they were very affordable. The price of a good blazer was around 100. The most expensive top or bottom was 70. There were many items at much lower prices. A great majority of the clothes carried the Tintoretto label, a good name in European fashion world. I started to pull out a few items, and that was when I realized none of them was my size. Most items showed sizes between 40 and 44 European. ("Perhaps that's why the store's name is Stock 40, the size begins at 40", Charles said.) Actually, the smallest item in the store indicated it was size 36 European or 10 US. This sizing business has always confused me a great deal, because not all European countries use the same sizing system. A size 10 US is 12 in the UK, 38 in Germany, 40 in France, and 44 in Italy. I had no idea what the equivalence was in Spain, but the "36 European or 10 US" did not make sense to me. I just knew all the clothes were too large for me and that was very disappointing. However, if your size is somewhere in the range of those confusing numbers, perhaps you would like to take a look at Stock 40 next time you are in Bilbao. After all, good clothing at affordable prices is difficult to find, so why pass them by? There are shops in every district in Bilbao, but these 2 are specially "shopping-targets". In the part of Gran Via between Plaza Moyua and Plaza Circular you will find all those big chains one after the other: Promod, Zara, Mango... as well as El Corte Ingles. The Casco Viejo has always been a shopping area - most of its streets still carry the names of shops: Sombrerería (Hats shop), Lotería. Nowadays it still houses many "independent" traditional shops, as well as many other chains. Lots of shoe shops also. All the shops in the old city were closed on Sunday. The restaurants and cafes remained open. Makes it nice for site-seeing-no crowds. You can have a nice quiet stroll, marvelling at the architecture and charm of the winding, narrow streets and then stop for a drink and tapas.

The market by the river in the Casco Viejo is one of the largest in Europe. It is an excellent introduction to the fish and meat (and veg. and cheese) in the Basque country. Not for the squeamish though! Open only in the mornings. Leave a Comment Theme: Food and Drink

This shopping centre contains a range of up-market shops, along with a supermarket, a cinema, and a floor of bars and food outlets. The Cinema and Food Areas are open long hours, the shops keep standard Spanish hours. The centre of BIlbao has a number of supermarkets. The most common of which are Ecorea. These are small supermarkets with limited range, and are quite expensive. Slightly larger but less common are Consum-Eroski, who are cheaper. There is an Eroski under Plaza Indautxu At Plaza Zabalburu there is a big Champion (part of Carrefour) and in the large Corte Ingles on Gran Via / Urquijo there is a supermarket on the 6th floor that has high quality foods at a high price.
Ecorea - good for bits and pieces Consum - eroski - good for meat Champion - broad range of everything Corte Ingles - Often has things that you miss from home Leave a Comment Theme: Other

In Spain, specialty stores were once the cornerstone of every day life, but now are becoming rarer and rarer. They offer personal service and friendly advice, as well as an intriguing insight into the past. Sombrerería Gorostiaga, one of these family-run specialty stores, is the oldest shop in Bilbao. It has been selling hats and all kinds of ornaments for the head for more than 150 years (it opened in 1857). His owner, Emilio Pirla, is the fourth generation of hat-makers and runs the business with professionalism, know-how, service quality and a great passion for the art of hat-making. The shop is very small and cramped with piles of hats and berets. It is what Spaniards call a tienda de toda la vida, that is, a traditional business which seems to have existed forever and which has not been affected by time.
All kinds of hats and headdresses, industrial or bespoke, but the speciality are the traditional Basque berets (txapelas), still worn by the older generations of Basques, and very fashionable lately among global trendy people. In Sombrerería Gorostiaga, you can find them in all the imaginable sizes and colours. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: Calle Víctor, in the Old Town.
