Guggenheim - don't bother
The much acclaimed Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao is not worth the effort. Yes I know some will want my blood for such heresy. The building is worth a visit if you happen to be in the area and yes it is spectacular, but the exhibitions left me wondering about the future of art.
I failed to see the artistic merit in displaying large pieces of broken concrete stairs complete with exposed steel reinforcing rods laid out across a very large exhibition space. I also failed to see the sense of pieces of rusty sheet steel displayed on their ends - also taking up far more space than should have been allowed for such "experimental art."
A technical problem we experienced was the lack of numbers in the exhibition areas corresponding to the audio guides and therefore we spent a lot of time looking to find numbers and less time looking at the art - but in hindsight maybe the audio guides were a better option if we could have tuned in to a local radio station - LOL
OK I know that art is in the eyes of the beholder, but Guggenheim Bilbao should diversify and present art from the many forms it takes and not just the modern.
On the plus side - the museum does give Australian Seniors Card holders a discount
About the photo: The giant spider on the river bank and next to the museum could send cold shivers down the spines of acranophobics - and that's my wife Sandra about to be devoured.

Hablá Español? Euskera?
The only trap here will be your lack of Spanish! Because Bilbao is so delightfully untouristy, you will really need to know a few phrases. If you didn't have a few years of high school Spanish, take a pocket phrase book. Better yet, make some Spanish friends and let them translate for you!
Unique Suggestions: English is spoken at the Guggenheim and there are English museum guides.

They drink and drink without stop, and you can find them how you see in the picture.
They answer you by the names Victor or Iñaki.
I'm glad to be alive after taking this picture... Risky job for me to take it.
