A politicised region

by timtregenza

The Basque Country is a politicised area. This does not mean it is dangerous, it simply means that there is an awareness of the challenges of competiting nationalisms. In the photo, the Basque slogan says "Basque prisoners to the Basque Country", about a controversial Spanish government policy to send "political" prisoners outside the Basque country. The lower slogan is to remind tourists of their geography.

Cleanliness

by timtregenza

If there is one thing that never ceases to amaze me, it is the amount of time that the Basques spend cleaning.Maybe it happens in the whole of Spain, but I have only really noticed it in Pais Vasco. Bars, shops, houses, they are at it all the time. For me the funniest thing is when gin is used to disinfect the counters of bars (it is probably cheaper than bleach and just as effective!

Watch out for the spelling!

by timtregenza

When looking for places in Euskadi (the Basque Country), take care as places may have different names or spellings.San Sebastian is Donostia for example.Be aware that Virtual Tourist use the Castellano names for places in the Basque country, so you may not find Gernika but instead Guernica. This can cause confusion not only when surfing this excellent site but also when travelling around.

marriage with the nature

by Peret

The Basques have lived in a way, a lot of years, that they have not building great cities (althoug now are Bilbo and Donosti)but have lived in strong proximity with the nature. In Gaztelugatxeko (Saint John) you can see an exemple of this.
