Pick The Right Bus
  • Tip Rating:
  • We took the Alsa bus from Bilbao to Donostia-San Sebastián, but on the return trip, the next available bus was from the Pesa line, and we bought the tickets without a thought. The first difference between the two buses was the price of the ticket. Alsa ticket cost 6.30 while Pesa ticket was €8.60. The price difference did not make sense to us because the buses were exactly the same inside and covered the same distance for the same amount of time. The Alsa bus was practically empty but the Pesa was packed to the brim. Although there were not many cars on the road, the Alsa driver practiced maximum defensive driving and respected the speed limit for the entire an hour ride, while the Pesa driver burnt rubber as if he was on the Indy 500. I usually suffer motion sickness on long distance bus ride especially when the road is curvy, but the Alsa driver made every turn as careful as he could and I was fine. It was different on the Pesa bus. Aside from the difference in the price of the ticket, our experience may not mean much to anyone. Perhaps the blame should stay with the individual bus driver and not the bus line, but for me, one incident was convincing enough to tip the scale and Alsa will be my only choice in the future. Note: The bus station in San Sebastián is located on Plaza Pio XII. There are almost 20 bus lines connecting San Sebastián with every part of Spain and many European cities. Walk
  • Tip Rating:
  • The best way to see everything in Donostia is to walk. The main spots are not too far from each other. Also, in most part of Old City are closed for traffic.

    Parking
  • Tip Rating:
  • We parked in underground garage close to Beach. I don't remeber the price, but it was not expensive. The best place to park and walk from there.

    By car
  • Tip Rating:
  • We came to Donostia from Toulouse, France. It was not so far and the road is good. Donostia is just 20 kilometers far from French-Spain border.

  • Look at Euskadi and Navarra tolls cause are the most expensive in Spain due to their ancestral exemption and privilege laws

    Bike or Walk
I studied in San Sebastian. I lived on the north-east end of town, and the univeristy was on the south-west end of town. I walked to and from class every day (I'm slow and out of shape). The walk took me between 40-45 minutes. You can walk or bike through this town with ease. If you don't have too much time, take the bus. There are buses running all over town and the bus routes are easy to understand. But if you're not in a hurry, walk it.
