Get a bus to Vitoria from Bilbao's Bus Station at San Mames.

Located on the south-side of Vitoria's main shopping district, follow Calle Eduardo Dato and you won't miss it.
It's 5 hours from Madrid
7 hours from Barcelona
We got to Vitoria by way of Bilboa, and found the bus (Lá Union) cheaper and faster. (1 hr.)

Yep, Vitoria has some Smart cars. Good thing too. Parking spots are hard to come by. Parking in the shopping and historical part of the city is restricted.

Already a beautiful city, everywhere you look Vitoria is adding on and/or refurbishing buildings and roads. It is a walker friendly city. This new promenade right outside our hotel door leads to and through Florida Park, right into the pedestrian shopping district or historical old city. We walked to our destinations 90% of the time during our stay. Traffic intersections are easy to cross too, as they all have traffic lights. There are also plenty of zebra crossings.

Vitoria is well connected to Bilbao, San Sebastian, Burgos or Madrid by bus. Also has an international airport Foronda, with flights to Madrid and Barcelona.

Pick up bus from San Mames, there are various ticket outlets.... The first time I got a little confused between Bus Number and Platform (too many beers no doubt) anyway it's easy to change your ticket, just point to yourself and say 'STUPIDO' then no problem! Anyway costs around 5 five euros and takes under an hour!

Vitoria serves excellent possibility to go around by bike. You may use special bikes owned by the town without any fee . The season begins in the end of May.

There is an airport at Vitoria, but it seems that none of the airlines fly there from Britain any more. You'll most likely fly into Bilbao, in which case, just get the bus from there - it takes an hour, and costs 5,45 euros one way (2008 price).
You'll arrive at Vitoria bus staton (pictured), from which is an easy walk to almost anywhere in the centre of town (a bit more if you're staying somewhere near the University for example).
From Vitoria, you can also get buses to Pamplona (about 15E return), Santander (about 20E return), San Sebastian (15,50E return), Zaragoza (15,67E single), Barcelona, and Madrid.
