 | Isla de La Palma Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 73 | | This probably the most spectacular route on the island, going from near Santa Cruz de La Palma in the west, up to 2450 meters at the top and back down to 1200 meters at Hoya Grande. Starting at Mirca, above S/C, the road twists and turns its way up the mountain, through the extensive pine forests, past a refugio (picnic and barbecue area) until you arive above the tree-line and see the bare volcanic landscape near the top. This area is covered with gorse, with its twisted stems and vivid yellow flowers, and broom with its creamy white flowers. There are many stopping places so take a look at the views over S/C and the east and north sides of the island. On approaching the top you will pass through areas of brightly coloured lava and volcanic ash formations. There is a small strip where you can park and look down over the northern part of the island and cross the road to the lookout point and look down into the caldera, with its specatular cliffs and rock formations. On some days you can watch clouds forming in the caldera and rising over the rim. Drive on the the entrance road to the observatory and up to the Roques. Here is a small carpark and an information hut which is occasionally open. Walk past the large standing rocks to get another view of the caldera, and the rest of the isalnd and, if you are lucky, Tenerife and La Gomera to the east and El Hierro to the south-west. You can follow the path to the outcrop of rock below to get even more spectacular views, but remember it's uphill all the way back and at nearly 2500 meters the air is thinner. The visitorscentre of the National Park is outside the park near El Paso. There is a nice botanical garden around the building, showing the trees of La Palma. In the visitors centre they show a documentary film in several languages about the National Park. The exhibitons about the park are very informative. In the centre they provide information in several languages with tips and regulations for the National Park, including a map with the walking routes and the permits for camping in the caldera. So itīs very useful to visit this centre first, before you start your hiking or camping in the caldera. The Cumbre (Nueva and Vieja), a 47 KM long mountain ridge from north to south divides the island La Palma in a wet eastern and a dry western part. El Paso and Los Llanos are in the western sunny part. We stayed in a casita between the banana plantations near the old road connecting both places. Los Llanos de Aridane (19.000 inhabitants) is a nice town with two lovely plazas, some good restaurants and many shops. El Paso ( 6000 inhabitants) has some nice old alleys in the towncentre. We enjoyed our stay in this area. It was also a good starting point for our trips and walks on the island. Leave a Comment

Puerto Naos has a large hotel Sol de Palma (465 rooms/apartments) and many other apartments for rent. There is a boulevard and a beach with palmtrees and black sand. There are bars, restaurants, shops and the largest concentration of tourists in the south west area. A village like the present Puerto Naos can be everywhere in the world. Nothing is left of the original structure of the village. We bought some bread at a German bakery and returned inland. North and south of Puerto Naos are some less crowded beaches. To have a first look at the Caldera de Taburiente we drove the day of arrival to La Cumbrecita (1300 M) not far from Los Llanos and El Paso. It was a nice drive of 8 KM through a forest of pine trees. At the end is a parking lot and from here you can do some shorter walks to the mirador de las Chosas (20 minutes) and the mirador Punta de las Roques (this last one we didnīt visit because the track was closed). From the mirador de las Chozas we had a splendid and clear sight at the deep Caldera and its surrounding peaks. There was only a small stripe of clouds, just hanging under the edge. What a wondeful start at our first day !! Leave a Comment Directions: From the TF 812 between El Paso and Santa Cruz, take the road to the National Park, just beside the Centro de Visitantes de el Paso, 4 KM west of El Paso.

The Cumbrecita is at the end of small valley alongside the cumbra (backbone) which has magnificent views of the Caldera. Beginning on the road from The Tunnel to El Paso you will see the Caldera Tourist center on the right. It's worth spending a little time here to study the geology, flora, fauna and history of the island. Immediately past this building is a side road leading towards the Caldera. After a few hundred meters there is a road to the right leading to the chapel "Ermita Pino de la Virgen. An isolated chapel with magnificent old pine trees. Return to the side road and carry on for a few hundred meters and take the next right turn (signposted Cumbrectita). This road continues for some kilometers through a wooded valley past picnic spots. You can see the remains of the old (and not so old) water pipes and gulleys alongside the road. The road rises and twists to the end point of the road which has a car park on the left for touring buses, and 50 meters further on the right, parking spaces for a few cars, you may have to turn back and park the car on the road. At this point you are at about 1400 meters above the sea, the rocks rise to above 2000 meters on both sides and to 2450 meters in front of you at the Roque de Muchachos. The floor of the Caldera in this area is at about 700 to 800 meters. There are some short walks that you can enjoy from this point. Take a short walk through the coach park and follow the wide track to the lookout point. Or go right and then down and left to come out at the same lookout point. There are also some other paths, but they are desceptively dangerous. Always wear suitable footware. Leave a Comment Directions: Center of the Island

The 10 KM long road from Las Tricias to Santo Domingo de Garafia is very scenic. The deep barancos are breathtaking. The hills are covered with beautlful succulent plants. And if you have a good look you can see a lot of caves in this area. Some of them are just along the road. Some have small doors and are used for storage or as stable for sheep and goats. Not long ago people also lived in some of the caves in this area. At the west side you have nice views at the ocean, at some places. Leave a Comment Directions: Coming from Los Llanos on the C-832, just north of Puntagorda leads a lovely road, not far from the coast, to Garafia.

Directly south of Fuencaliente you can visit the vulcano San Antonio. From the parking lot it is an easy walk to the edge of the vulcano. It takes only ten minutes to walk there, so don't miss it. From the path we had a splendid view at the coastline and the orchards on the hills of Las Indias. From here you can see also the yellow Roque de Tenequia int he western slope and El Faro south with its saltpans. The most beautiful of all is the view at the wonderful magical colours of the Volcan de Teneguia. The path from here down to this vulcano is closed because of nature protection. So go back to the parking lot and follow from here the sign Teneguia and Faro. Leave a Comment

In Fuencaliente the road to the vulcano de San Antonio is signposted. The hot spring of Fuencaliente is allready disappeared in 1667 after an eruption of the San Antonio. Fishermen tell the hot spring is now bubbling in the sea. South of Fuencaliente is a large parking lot. Here is the interesting Fuencaliente Volcanoes Visitor Centre with good explanations about the vulcanic history of the island and showing an impressing film of the eruption of the Vulcan Teneguia in 1971. From the parkinglot you can walk to the San Antonio (10 minutes) or start your 8 KM walk to the Roque Teneguia (here we found prehistoric inscriptions), to the Vulcan de Teneguia and El Faro down at the coast. In the harbour of Puerto Tazacorte at the westcoast you can book a boattrip. We liked it to sail along the coast and to visit the Cueva Bonita in the north, a 84 M deep cave, only reachable from the sea. We didn't see dolphins and whales, sometimes they are around. From the sea we had a fantastic view at the Cumbre with its typical clouds hanging over the ridge. The most spectacular view from the sea was at the entrance of the Caldera de Taburiente.
