Sea-lion jumping through a hoop by easyoar As a must-see site, the Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife is exceptional if you like wildlife and plants. The garedens are immaculate and the animals well cared for and they have some very good shows. This picture shows the performing sea-lions. They put on a very good show, but the animals are quite temperamental, so when we saw them the first time, the show was very good, whereas the second time we saw the show, one of the sea-lions went AWOL (Absent without leave), meaning the show was rather shortened. The moral being that it can be well worth attending some of the shows more than once. Whereas the dolphin show was fairly easy to photograph as they tended to give you a good indication of what was going to happen next, and often repeat the move more than once. The sea-lions were much more difficult as they would suddenly do something unexpected and the move would not be repeated. Leave a Comment

Beach shower - how civilised! by mazzap If you're anything like me, the first thing you look for in a good beach is a shower! Well Tenerife is definitely high on my list for places that provide this simple but in my opinion 'necessary' facility! Every beach in Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos seems to have them - and they work! Leave a Comment

If you've gotta go......... by mazzap Don't worry - they can be found easily along the promenade situated just at the edge of the beach. There are several purpose built cabins that can be found every few hundred yards or so as you walk the few km between Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos! They are basic with a washbasin inside the cubicle and are generally clean (well clean enough!) and the best bit is they're free!!! Leave a Comment

Dolphin jumping over a man standing on 2 dolphins by easyoar This was another of the shows at Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz. For me, it was the best show as the dolphins were highly trained and seemed to be enjoying every minute of the show. The dolphins were also relatively easy to photograph as the tricks were normally indicated in some way. For instance in the attached photo, the guy stood on two dolphins and raised his arms. It didn't take a lot of guessing that a dolphin would jump over him, so I pre-focussed the camera on the guys body and waited. When the dolphin jump, it was just a case of waiting for it to pass over the guys head and clicking the shutter button. The show must have lasted at least half an hour, and the dolphins did many jumps (through hoops, up in the air to hit hanging balls, and up to grab a fish from a person hanging high in the air). It was well worth watching, and you are free to see it as many times in a day as you like. Leave a Comment

Camels in the desert! by easyoar As you are driving South from Icod, you will go past a place on the right called the Camello Center. As the name suggests, it is possible to have camel rides here. It costs 8 Euros to go on a camel, and 4 Euros to go on a donkey. Both rides are for 20 minutes, and take you off behind the camello center. Having ridden on camels a few times before and knowing how smelly and cantankerous they can be, I did not bother to have another go. There is a littl restuarant and shop there too, so you can grab a sandwich or some drinks etc. Leave a Comment

Sunset in El Teide by agarcia A thick layer of clouds cover the feet of El Teide most days of the year, although the clouds rarely reach the top of the mountain. That creates some exceptional conditions for astronomic observations, and I'm sure the guys who placed a couple of top class observatories there where fully aware of that fact.
It also creates the ideal location to witness one of the most spectacular sunsets I've ever seen. It's something difficult to describe with words, or even with pictures. As the Sun goes down, the layer of clouds turns slowly into an intense yellow and orange tone, while the siluete of the mountain remains like a mysterious pyramid, placed in the middle of nowhere. An absolutely breathtaking image. Leave a Comment

Koi Carp in a feeding frenzy by easyoar As you enter Loro Parque, you will go through a large Thai pavilion and find yourself in front of a big lake. This lake is full of lots and lots of Koi Carp which look impressive, but you haven't seen anything until they get fed! Every so often, a Discovery Tour leaves from this site, and the fist thing they do is throw a little fish fod into the water for the carp. At this point they go nuts and all thrash around together frantically trying to get food. This picture shows exactly this. Koi Carp are highly prized in japan, and have beeen bred for over 100 years there with just one goal in mind. The objective is to breed a white Koi Carp, that has a single red mark on its breast. The reason for this is? Because it mirrors the Japanese flag! A good example of a Koi Carp will fetch over 100,000 USD at auction. They assure you at Loro Parque that there are no such carp in their pond! Leave a Comment

Bird of Paradise by agarcia Nature is persistent and powerful in Tenerife. Given the mild weather, is not hard to explain the quantity and diversity of flowers, foliage and vegetation in general all around the island. It is also remarkable to find that vegetation changes substantially with the altitude, and as the configuration of Tenerife is so abrupt, one can find himself changing from a tropical plantation of bananas to a high mountain landscape in a matter of minutes! I guess it happens more or less the same in every tropical or subtropical environment: you can almost hear the vegetation growing if you put an ear close enough to them ;-) Leave a Comment

Red Admiral Butterflies by easyoar Although Red Admiral butterflies also live in England, these ones seemed a bit bigger. You als certainly wouldn't see them over Christmas time! If you enlarge the picture, you can see the butterflies tongue going into the flower to drink the nectar. This one was flying around the gardens in the Piramides de Guimar and I could see quite a few people paying more attention to the gardens here than to the Pyramids. I'm not sure what the purple flowers were, but they were attracting a ot of attention from all sorts of different butterflies. Leave a Comment

Watch out for that Croc... by easyoar Crocodiles are considered to be the perfect animal. They are unchanged genetically since the time of the dinosaurs. They may be stupid (they have tiny brains and no logic), but what they do they do to perfection, and that is killing other animals in water. Due to the ridges on their backs, the water just glides throuhg leaving hardly a ripple as they swim towards their prey. When they snap their jaws closed, it is with so much power that they shatter the strongest bone, and then they drag their prey under the water until it stops struggling, and then consume it. The crocs in Loro Parque are behind a glass fronted wall so you can get right up next to them. One I saw had small fishes swimming into his mouth and eating the food in his teeth. The crocodile ignored them and let them clean him up. Leave a Comment
