    Flogging Octopus in the street

Flogging is a slang English expression meaning "to sell". However Octopus is apparently quite tough when it is caught, and to make it tender and suitable to eat, the now deceased Octopus is beaten/whipped/flogged to tenderise it. I presume this Octopus had already been flogged when I saw it lying in the bottom of the container waiting to be sold.

I asked the man if I could take a picture and he shrugged acceptance. He then decided to lift it up to show it to me, which made a much better picture. The Spanish are normally quite easy going, and in most cases will agree to be photographed if you ask them. Just ask!

It is probably the most notorious architectural detail of the Canary Islands as almost every house older that 100 year will present on of those wood balconies. The effect is even greater in well preserver urban areas, such as La Laguna, which was the old capital city of the island, and was recently designated as World Heritage by Unesco. Another extraordinarily well-preserved area is La Orotava historic center.

    Dressing up at Fiesta time

When it comes to partying, the Spanish are up there with the best of them, and really like to let their hair down.

I took this picture at the Reyes Magos fiesta which is on the 05th Jan every tear in virtually every Spanish city anywhere (this was in Puerto de la Cruz). It celebrates the three wise men visiting baby Jesus and delivering presents, and the fiesta is all about three men dressed up as kings, throwing sweets to the kids (although in this case a large foreign contingent of adult holiday makers from one of the larger EU countries decided to elbow the kids out the way to get the sweets for themselves - I saw at least one kid crying due to this).

I took quite a lot of pictures at this fiesta. To photograph people there, all it normally takes is a point to your camera and a point at them, and they will happily pose for you like these girls did for me - I even had to ask them twice as I had been playing with my flash gun and had it on a very inappropriate setting the first time!

    Black shingle beach
    by HORSCHECK
Due to the volcanic nature of the island, Tenerife has many natural black shingle beaches. Most of these beaches can be found in the northern part of the island around Puerto de la Cruz, whereas man made golden sandy beaches are at the main tourist resorts like Los Christianos and Las Americas.

The Islands are blest with a temperate climate with little rain & many hours of sunshine. The lack of rain makes little difference to the growth of plants as they get water from the cooling effect of night time when the volcanic soil stores moisture from the atmosphere. Every villa is bedecked with spectacular flowers.

It's always time for a siesta, and there's no better place for one than at a cool seaside patio restaurant. We stopped in Garrachico and enjoyed yummy plates of calamari and shrimp with our views of the turquoise waves crashing on the rocks in front of us. This is the life alright. Ole. ;-)))

  • the cuisine is influenced by tourist and spanish food but there are two things that are tipycaly canarian:
*the mojo sauces: made of vinegar, garlic, oil and either green or red pepper.the red sauce is usually served with potatoes and the green one with fish.
*the canarian potatoes: cooked in sea water and then baked( it tastes lovely).
a tipycal meal would be a local fish served with canarian potatoes and green mojo sauce.

Canarian wrestling is the most tipical sport in the Islands. It appeared before the Spanish conquest in second half of 15th century and so was practiced by aborigines. The first written testimony about it can be encountered in a XV century chronicle. This sport took place during many social and religious events, and over the years has become more and more popular. Since its beginnings the game has been characterized by good sportsmanship and nobility on the part of the participants, with the players bowing to their opponents both before and after the fight. The wrestlers must always show respect to their opponents at all times, not just during the match but also before and after the fight.

Romeria are traditional canarian festivities with colourful processions with special dresses, mouth-watering dishes, traditional games, beautiful folkloric cars, music and dancing in abundance filling the days around the actual Saint or Virgin`s day, proving once more that religion is the best excuse to a party. These festivities date as far back as the 17th century. They begin on Friday afternoon with games like sack-racing, colour-parachutes, exhibition of animals, and many more. Later at night, you can admire the locals dancing the Baile de los Magos , presented in traditional costumes reserved for this particular dance. The most famous are in Tegueste, La Orotava, La Laguna, Garachico and Santa Cruz.
