The only 'niceish' view in Playa Paraiso! by mazzap If you feel energetic take a walk from Playa de las Americas, along the coastline to Playa Paraiso. To begin with it's easy along the promenade, but then it's up and down across the fields and deserted beaches. It took us 4 hours!! Admittedly we did stop for a drink, but only for 15 minutes! Arriving at Playa Paraiso was a huge disappointment - we thought the whole resort was depressingly grotty and would have hated to have been 'dumped' there for a week, or worse still, two! Luckily, buses run all the way back (all our efforts to get there were repeated in reverse in a 15 minute bus ride!) Though the end goal was a big let-down, the actual trek was an interesting and enjoyable experience! The journey takes you along a nudist beach, through the centre of 2 hippy communes and also a disused banana plantation! Leave a Comment

Strelitzia (AKA Bird of Paradise Flower) Tenerife by easyoar This flower is all over Tenerife, and seems to be an unoffical emblem of the islands. It seems to grow as a long green pod, which suddenly splits open on the top side, and the beautiful orange shoots pop out. It is possible to buy seedlings and small plants of this plant to take back home (assuming your customs men don't have any issue with this - for instance I can't see New Zealand customs being too happy if you tried to take one in!). Indeed I have one myself, so I will have to see how well it survives in the much cooler English climate, I suspect I will have to keep it as a house plant! Apparently in the USA, this flower is called the bird of paradise flower as it can be interpreted as resembling a bird if you look at it from a particular angle. In San Francisco the florists sell one flower for around $5.00! In Tenerife you can probably just go and pick one for free... (Thanks to VTs 'CALSF' for the info in this last pararaph!) by elcolibri Taganana is one of the remotest villages in Tenerife and is famed for it’s local produce, most notably it’s Rose Wine and fresh fish. Tucked away in the far north east of the island, after a journey along serpentine mountain roads through ancient woodland, the tiny village with black sand beaches is well worth the wait. Enjoy some of the wonderful Rose Wine whilst gazing out across a seemingly endless ocean and sample some of the delicious fish dishes on offer made with produce fresh from the warm Mediterranean. It’s an unbeatable combination and a definite must-do when visiting Tenerife. Leave a Comment

Chili Peppers - Tenerife by easyoar I was quite surprised to see Chilli Peppers growing in the Canary Islands. My general experience of Spain is that Spanish people aren't used to eating food that is all that spicy. In case you don't know, the national dish in England is now Indian food. There are so many Indian restaurants here, that the most popular dish is Indian food. Some of the dishes have actually been invented in England for the English palate (apparently Chicken Tikka Masala is one such dish - the Brits prefer moister dishes to the standard 'drier' Indian cuisine). It's a bit of an aside, but probably explains why I feel the Spanish aren't used to spicy food. These peppers were in Masca, a beautiful little town in the mountains, and were growing against a bar. It was the only place I saw them growing in Tenerife. Leave a Comment

North coastline by agarcia The best part of Tenerife is the north of the island; I have little doubts about this. Without entering in any discussion about the kind of tourism that heads blindly to the sunnier areas of the south (Playa de las Americas, Los Cristianos), I simply prefer the spectacular landscapes of this part of Tenerife, rather than the dull semi-desert and arid south. Besides some well know places, like the overrated Icod de los Vinos (the Dragon Tree, you know), it holds many interesting surprises, such as Los Realejos, a quite small village that is, by far, much more charming than Icod. But above all, I simply loved the roads up there, the dramatic cliffs, the banana plantations, the little pleasures of being on the road. If you go there, I will suggest you to stop for a coffee at one gas station called "El Mirador" between Icod and Los Realejos. It's a gas station, so don't expect much charm there. What you could expect are a simply breathtaking view of Tenerife north coastline. Leave a Comment

by elcolibri Hells Gorge (Barranco del Infierno) in spite of its fearsome name is an oasis in the harsh and arid south Tenerife landscape. It is the only location you will find natural running water in the island. The canyon is very deep and the path might disturb vertigo sufferers. There are several viewing points along the path. You will find many interesting plants in the path and a waterfall at the end that is not particularly exciting in it but it's quite unexpected in such a dry landscape. . This site was classified as Macizo de Adeje y Barranco del Infierno Nature Park and reclassified as a special nature reserve. The entire stretch takes only two and a half hours beginning in Adeje Town. Leave a Comment

Colorful Garachico streets by agarcia Most of Tenerife's towns are excellent homages devoted to the uncontrolled urbanism., Located some 60 km. West of Santa Cruz , the village of Garachico, could not be accounted among the damaged by the urban chaos, as its inhabitants had tried (with remarkable success), to preserve the colonial atmosphere that Tenerife enjoyed some centuries ago. Mind you, this place is an authentic photography paradise. As people gets more and more aware of that fact, Garachico is quickly becoming into one of Tenerife's most exclusive areas, with some of the best hotels and accommodations of the island, as well as fashion shops, a decent night life. Definitely, the tourist industry chose a different target here... I wish there would be more places like this in Tenerife... Leave a Comment

Red Hibiscus in Puerto de la Cruz by easyoar If you are going to Puerto de la Cruz, and you visit the Playa Jardin (Literally Beach Garden) which is a beach of black sand, make sure you walk to the back of the beach (the end of it furthest from the town centre), and look at the gardens there. The gardens are very well looked after and have a lot of lovely flowers in them. This Red Hibiscus was found there, although to be fair, you will probably see Red Hibiscus plants all over the island. Hibiscus tends to only grow in more tropical climates, so if you are from somewhere with cold winters, it may well be a new plant to you. Leave a Comment

by elcolibri Tenerife has also a lot of nudist beaches for people who love it. The main are La Tejita, Montana Pelada and Montana Roja (in Granadilla), Playa de los Patos (La Orotava), Playa de Diego Hernández (Adeje), Playa de Montana Amarilla (San Miguel) and Playa de Las Gaviotas (Santa Cruz) but there are hidden and lonely places where you can swimm as you like. Bee pollenating a yellow flower by easyoar This was one of the things that caught my attention when I should have been looking at the Piramides de Guimar. The Piramides de Guimar site actually has some very nice gardens around it with well labelled plants (so you actually know what you are looking at). They seem to specialise in plants native to the Canary Islands. Having said all of that, I cannot actually remember what this flower actually is! There were lots of bees flying around them, and they seemed to have orange bits attached to their legs (no, it wasn't pollen, it was actually part of the bee - you can see them in this photo).
