A whale - not a shark!! by mazzap Get a boat from Los Cristianos harbour - the whole trip takes around two hours and several run daily. They guarantee you will see whales. Dolphins are not so commonplace! We saw around 6 whales and once spotted, they swim alongside the boat, diving in and out of the water as if they are showing off! At least it shows they are not fearful of the camera wielding, adventure hungry tourists who point at them and squeel excitedly - (yes...me too)!! Leave a Comment Address: Los Cristianos - several different operatorsDirections: Just turn up on the jetty & book on the day

So, so, pretty! by mazzap Everywhere is beautifully decorated for the Christmas season. All the big hotels seem to compete with one another and all the streets are lit up with thousands of sparkling lights! I've put more pics on a travelogue as I couldn't stop snapping!! Leave a Comment Address: All around streets, hotels and shops!

One of the many beaches to choose from! by mazzap They may be man made, but they are spacious, clean and close to everything you'd need! In the main resorts on the south of the island, you are never far from a beach to relax on. All the facilities you'd expect, such as toilets, showers, sunbeds/parasols and first aid points, can always be found close by. Leave a Comment Address: All along most of the main resorts

The view from a boat in the harbour by mazzap A lovely place to stroll around. The harbour is the place to find boat trips and also the ferry to the nearby Canary island of La Gomera. Los Cristianos centre has many shops, restaurants, bars and of course....it's very close to a lovely beach! There are several large hotels here and plenty of other choice of accommodation. A fairly lively place, but quieter than it's bigger neighbour, Plays de las Americas. Both resorts merge and are easily walked between. Leave a Comment Address: Along the south coast of TenerifeDirections: Neighbouring Playe de las Americas

Tenerife and Mount Teide from the air! by mazzap A spectacular inactive volcano. It can be seen from almost anywhere on the island if not hidden by low cloud! It is the highest point in Spain. Take an organised coach trip from your resort or drive yourself there. A cable car runs regularly almost to the top, but when we went we had to wait ages - also, it doesn't run if it's windy! Don't forget to take a jacket too - it's deceivingly cold after spending time on the sunny beaches below! Leave a Comment Address: You can't miss it!

Forecasts of very cloudy weather sent us up north to have a look at the Capital - Santa Cruz de Tenerife. We set off prepared to stay overnight. An easy journey by motorway gave us tantalizing glimpses of what we were passing on the way - including the rugged coastline and places of interest like Guimar and Candelaria. As we entered the city we stopped to admire Lago Martiánez, the beautifully laid out park and lido designed by the famous Canarian artist César Manrique. As well as a large lake for swimming there are several smaller bathing pools with sun bathing areas and refreshments. A little further on we stopped to view the Concert Hall and Opera house designed by another famous Spanich artist and architect - Santiago Calatrava. The sky was clear, the sun shining; we liked the look of what we had seen so far so decided to stay a night. We parked in the Harbour area and went to the tourist office for a list of Hotels. It was only a short walk but we were struck by some of the architecture of the buildings. The Palacio Insular houses the Island Administration Offices and the Tourist Office. Fortunately the staff there were rather more friendly than the forbidding Franco post Civil War era building. September 6 2009. Important- change of location - the Tourist Office has moved to a new Green Building please see aaaarrgh's Tip - http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/85376/3e2a2/4/ We returned "Home" via La Orotava, Laguna and Icos de los Vinos along a spectacular road with great views over Puerto de La Cruz and were very impressed with not only the scenery but the more laid back, and restrained tourism in this part of the island compared with the south of the island. Masca Valley by agarcia Before reaching Punta de Teno, in the western part of the island, one of the best keep secrets of Tenerife could be found. Masca Valley, with its impressive rock formations, its always menacing weather conditions and the little village that lies on its floor, hardly ever causes indifference to the viewer. I remember thinking: "Machu Pichu!!!" as the configuration of the valley immediately brought to my mind the image of the mythical mountain in Peru. If Masca existence still remains almost unknown, is partly because access to the valley is constrained to the use of a terrible mountain road... of the kind that no rookie driver should be allowed to drive ;-) On a second thought, it could also be due to the lack of decent beaches in the area. Go figure. Leave a Comment Directions: If you follow the North highway of Tenerife, after leaving Garachico there's a detour to Masca.

We took a "FreeBird Sailing" Whale & Dolphin watching Cruise from Puerto Colón. This firm has a number of sailing vessels including one said to be the largest catamaran in the world. We saw plenty of whales and dolphins , our excellent Guide - Barry was very knowledgable and made it a very interesting and enjoyable experience. A buffet lunch of cold meats and salads was provided on Board and there was a short time at anchor to allow for swimming in the Bay. Overall a very pleasant way to spend an informative few hours in a fun atmosphere. BUT - we fell for the onboard "Official" Photo - overpriced and not very good - you don't have to buy one! by elcolibri The Laurisilva is a forest formed by a great variety of trees of perennial leaf whose existence is kept by a high humidity and soft temperature with scarce oscillations along the year. These conditions occur in the fog area of the northern facades of the Canary Islands, between 700 and 1.200m above sea level, due to condensation of the up going masses of air loaded with humidity, transported by the Trade winds. The best example of Lurisilva Forest in Tenerife are in the Anaga Mount. Leave a Comment

Piramides de Guimar by easyoar The Piramides de Guimar are a strange place to visit. The brochure that you get at the tourist office doesn't really tell you very much, so you don't really know what to expect when you geet there. When you do get there, they don't really tell you very much either, so you go away not really knowing exactly what you have seen. As best as I could ascertain, these Pyramids are around a couple of thousand years old, and have not really been renovated at all. They appear to have been part of some sun-worshipping cult with close links to the pyramids in Egypt and Mexico. However nobody really seems to sure of any of this, and the information you do get there leaves decisions up to you as to what really is the truth. Much as I probably shouldn't have, I kind of lost interest as I walked around these pyramids. I spent more time looking (and photographing!) the butterflies in the gardens around them! Sad but true! Thor Heyerdahl lived around this spot for several years before he died and championed them, and it was his interest in the site that encouraged me to go see them, as I have followed some of Thor Heyerdahls theories and work on Easter Island, which is a really fascinating place. However whilst Easter Island was for me a wonderful experience, these pyramids left me feeling a little dissatisfied, even if I couldn't really put my finger on exactly why. Leave a Comment Directions: Up the East Coast motorway to Guimar, then turn off and follow the very well hidden signs to the pyramids. We had to stop and ask directions as the signs were so bad!
