The valleys of La Gomera are the perfect environment for growing a diverse display of fruit trees. The main fruit crop of the Island is the same throughout the Canaries - small sweet bananas are grown on plantations. We used to get this fruit in UK shops but not any more, some are still exported to Spain.

The story goes - The volcanic eruption roared it's way down towards the sea - then changed course as the people took shelter in the church. Miraculously missing the said church.
The story is repeated in every Canary Island but this one made me smile - The Church is painted white so you can see it plainly -
Do you??

The church of nuestra senora de la Ascension is where Colombus prayed before leaving for America (gave him good luck didn't it) in San Sebastian.
I saw in a video the traditional way of communicating at the old times;it was a complicated wistling that was heard along the mountains. It was also amazing to see the respect the Gomeros show to nature and the high standard of protection and preservation of their national park .And sth funny ;if you are able to find a wild palm tree that is not pruned watch it;it's like a bush!

To communicate with each other , the inhabitants of the different valleys use a whistling language. Sometimes demonstrations are given for tour groups. Try to see the demonstration... it's fun.
