  • As you climb higher the scenery, flowers and trees will change rapidly until you arrive in the rain forest on top of the island.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Buy a hiking guide and follow one of the many trails. Because of the buildup of the island (a round vulcano) you go through different climate zone's as you go up to the center (to the rainforrest).

  • Tip Rating:
  • The American Star shipwreck (a beached Ocean Liner) is situated on the west coast of the island near at Playa de la Solapa, which is near Pajara. It can only be accessed via a dirt road which runs at the side of a military zone. Take the wrong dirt path and you will know it lol. The wreck is beached near the cliffs at the end of the dirt road. Do not try climb on board this shipwreck as many people have been killed or injured attempting it.

  • Tip Rating:
  • There are very few 'off the beaten path' destinations in the most touristic islands.

    - In Tenerife you should perhaps visit the Northern tip: Anaga, La Laguna and Santa Cruz (see travelogue villages and cities of the Canaries).
    - In Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura you should visit the interior and its beautiful landscapes.
    - In Lanzarote, I recommend to go to La Geria area: wineyards cultivated on vulcanic land. A really eccentric landscape. The Salinas de Janubio and the beaches of Famara are also left apart by many visitors.
    - The smaller islands (Gomera, La Palma and Hierro) can be considered as 'of the beaten path', for tourism is not very developed yet, specially in el Hierro, a paradise yet to be discovered.

  • Tip Rating:
  • For those into watersports, the beach at Medano, just east of the airport is ideal. I can't remember the name of the place I rented my windsurf board from, but you can't miss it. Head towards El Medano town and take a right turn down a rough road about 500m before the town centre. There's a car park about a mile down the road. The kit hire place is on the beach. Hire kit, lean back and enjoy the ride!

  • Tip Rating:
  • A car is essential,or even better a Jeep. There were a lot of places our little Fiat Punto couldn't go because it was too rough!
But we got around quite well considering. On the road between Antigua and Betancuria there is a very high viewing house with a restaurant and tapas bar. The view is awesome!

  • Tip Rating:
  • Lanzarote - Cesar Manrique's house - he was a local artist who is now dead and his house has been turned into a museum and gallery. Very interesting as his house is also built within lava pipes. Think this was on the road up the centre towards Teguise old town.
