Many restaurants in tourist heavy locations have expensive prices for average meals. You'll know a tourist restaurant because it has pictures of its food and a menu that's translated into 5 different languages. You can find meals that are much better and half the price by walking over a street or two and looking for a menu without translations.
Unique Suggestions: I am not saying the food at these locations is not worth eating, and it's very useful to have a menu which you can actually understand without a translation guide, but if you must eat at these places the waiters prefer you order by number instead of name.
Fun Alternatives: There are many wonderful places to eat in Santa Cruz. In fact- there's even a "good eating guide" that your hotel is likely to have. Pick one up and find some culinary delights that even the locals enjoy.
