GRAN CANARIA, Las Palmas

by Maria_75

Las Palmas is the capitol of Gran Canaria, and the largest city on the island. In the old district of Las Palmas, Vegueta, you can find the historical and important buildings. This is were Christopher Columbus stayed before he went to the new world. The city also has a great beach, Las Canteras, plenty of shoppingcentres and two very famous shoppingstreets, Calle Mesa y Lopez and Calle Mayor de Triana. There are plenty of museums, parks, restaurants, bars, discos and other entertaining things to be found here. Definetly worth a trip.Click here to read more about Las Palmas

GRAN CANARIA

by Maria_75

Gran Canaria is the third largest of the islands, after Tenerife and Fuerteventura. But still it is not bigger than that you can drive around the whole island in one day.The island is dominated by huge touristresorts, mostly inhabited by british, german and scandinavian tourists. It has a reputation for being as lively as Tenerife, but with better beaches. You can still find some stunning scenery here, from desertlike sanddunes and pine forests, to banana plantations and volcanic landscapes. Beachlovers like it in the south were there are most sunnydays in the year, and windsurfers are in heaven on the south-east coast.

Mirador del Rio

This is a look out point set into the top of the high Riscar de Famara on the most northerly point of the island, and was built on the site of an earlier watchtower. The view then was of pirate ships on the horizon and in the 1898 Spanish-American war it was a gun battery. Cesar Manrique designed the mirador.Below this point are the salt flats and the narrow strait of El Rio.

Saint Cross of Tenerife

The Northern tip of the Island of Tenerife scapes to a large extent the hordes of sun-avid tourists that invade the resorts of the South. It is here that Santa Cruz, the island capital, is located. The city is surrounded by the Natural Park of Anaga, that preserves the best laurisilva forests in Tenerife. Santa Cruz replaces neighbouring La Laguna as the capital thanks to the prosperity and growth that the port brought to the city. Nowadays, it is a modern city with more than 230.000 inhabitants and a valuable downtown with historical buildings and parks with lush tropical vegetation, like the García Sanabria Park, pictured here.

The Palms of Grand Canary

by DanielF

When one of those reknowned universities launched a study in order to determine which city has the best weather, they reached the conclusion that manyNorthern Europeans had found about for many years without need of complicated scientific research and measurements: Las Palmas is. Almost no variation in temperature around the year and almost no rainfall at all, make of Las Palmas a year-round destination. You will feel here at ease, no matter if you want to scape the rigourous cold of the winter or the scorching heat of the summer. I have a certain predilection for the Canary islands and for Las Palmas in particular. The 350.000 inhabitants of Las Palmas are warm-hearted and funny people that will make your visit unforgettable. That is, if you find your way out of your hotel swimming-pool in Maspalomas. This picture shows the so called "House of Columbus", one of the oldest in Las Palmas...

Puerto de la Cruz

by Eszter

Puerto de la Cruz on the island of Tenerife, has an old history. It was founded at the beginning of the 17th century and populated by people from La Orotava and from the Spanish mainland: especially Catalans and Portuguese who in the defence of the wine trade converted this town into one of the most active ports of the country.

Teide

by Eszter

The island of Tenerife is the island of the Teide. Its name is "Mountain of snow" or "white mountain." With its 3718 meters above sea level, the Teide is the highest mountain of Spain. The so-called Ucanca Valley at the foot of the Teide has an almost lunar landscape - no vegetation, just petrified lava.

La Fiesta de Mayo

by albleroy

Every year, at the first weekend of may, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife we have big festivities. In the town garden they have a big floral exhibition and floralia. The weekend they have a big dinner party for all local people dressed in typical local dresses. This year (2003) present were about 15000 people who were all dressed in there typical Canarian dresses, a magic spectacle!!!

Atlantic cruise

by mariquita

We visited two of the islands while we were doing our Atlantic cruise: Tenerife and Lanzarote. Both are beautiful, unique and very different to each other. I wish the boat had stopped in some of the other 5 major islands! Unfortunately we not have but a glimpse of them from the deck. And that was indeed a beautiful sight!
