Young people, very friendly...
Young people, very friendly and helpful, that try to sell you a 'time share' property. Say NO and certainly DON'T go with them. You will have lost at least half a day listening to their sly sales techniques.

As there are plenty of foreign tourists spending holidays on Canary Islands, all sorts of vendors and salesmen try to sell you flowers, jewellery, souvenirs and stuff, most of them fake. They stop you on the streets and may even start to make a wrist band round your arm so that you can't stop them. And when it's ready, they charge you huge amounts, for the made job, whether you wanted it or not...Some vendors try to give roses and all kinds of flowers to ladies and women (in restaurants, streets) and charge then highly. The worst thing is that, when it's time to pay, they act like they don't accept your coins or money, and insist on TAKING MONEY FROM YOUR WALLET THEMSELVES!!!!! Be aware...
It is held on a Sunday. If you decide to go, use the local bus service. It is excellent and is a fraction of the cost of the organised tours.Looking round the market at what was supposed to be handmade products from Lanzarote, made me realise that they were identical to some handmade Cypriot products!!!! Listen to the local folk music and watch some traditional dancing. Visit the town on a weekdday when you can visit the little shops .
MUNDO ABORIGINJust north of Maspalomas there is this open air museum of the ancient people of the island.Verry expensive for what you get here, and the free drink that they promise is nothing more then a glass of cold water.NO THANKS.
SHOPS...SHOPS...SHOPS in TENERIFE.Do not forget to avoid those people playing a very dangerous game for you. It is played with 3 cards (if you see 3 local people surrounding a man with the cards, they belong to the same band) and you must choose one. First you may get some money but afterwards you may loose everything and have problems with the Police.
Day Trips!!!The day trips organised by the Tour companies were not very good and over priced. The worst was the boat trip to Feurteventura which was unbearable. Almost everyone on the boat (approx 80) got sick and then the town we were left in was awful with nothing to do for 5 miserable hours
When out at night in any of the resorts ignore the Bar & Restaurant touts and do what YOU want. Otherwise you just waste your money and time wandering between these places. You will hear about all the good places by word of mouth.
You have the choice between a typical 'sun & swim' holiday and a cultural, natural Canarian experience. If you prefer the first one, there are many resorts which are tourist paradises: Puerto de la Cruz in Tenerife's North Coast is very beloved by North Europeans, in Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos, the weather is sunnier and nightlife is livelier. If you go to Gran Canaria, the best known resorts are Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés. Finally, in Lanzarote you have Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen. As I said, these are not tourist traps, since the infrastructure is really good and the possibilities for having fun are countless, but you have to know that they are meant for sun & fun seekers from the mainland. This picture shows Puerto de la Cruz as seen from one of Hotel Botánico's terrasses.
