If you do hire a car, always...

by UK_Man

If you do hire a car, always make sure that you have plenty of fuel. I ended up driving around the back roads of Lanzarotte when I got lost, with the fuel guage already in the red, and no idea where I was in relation to an open garage. After about 40km of praying I found a sign saying 'Garage 200m' which I followed for over 1km. Eventually my wife noticed a Garage down a side street where I filled up. It turns out that this was the only garage for miles around, and without my wife's keen eyes i would have easily missed it!

A good way to see a lot of Tenerife is by boat, but try to pick one with an engine that works, as you can just about make out from this picture we had to be towed home from about ten miles out..most embarrasing!

You will most definately need a car. most of the resorts are spread out and with nothing but dust and rock tracks between them. Our resort was small and didn't have much in the way of super markets and shops, and the journey on foot to the nearest resort took a good 20 minute hike across not so good terrain.(no good for push chairs or elderly)but took 5 mins in the car. Lazy I know but in that sizzling heat it almost killed me!

Getting to Fuerteventura is only really accessable by plane. Toruble is most flights from UK on go on Wednesdays. The only way to get around Fuerteventura sensibly is by jeep. You can hire them form Corralejo at 40,000 pts for week (around £170). With the jeep you can access all the island including (if your surfing) all the North Track which runs from Corralejo to El Cotillo. If you attempt to take a car over this track you must be mad as its litually cut reef and rock from Majanicho onwards. You have been warned !!!

Apart from being on foot, the best way is to go by bus. The island is small, only 30 kms in diameter or so, but because of the buildup of the island (a vulcano) it is impossible to drive around it on a coastal road. All the traffic first has to climb to the central highland and then descent towards a villages at the coastline again. A spectacular busride! You could bring a rental car from Tenerife, but it would kind of spoil the fun. The island is too small for that.

You will probably get to the Canary Islands by plane. There are good connections from the main cities in Europe to the most touristic islands: Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. If you want to visit La Palma o el Hierro you will have to change in Tenerife or Gran Canaria. There are no direct flights to the mainland. Be careful and reserve your place in advance for peak times like Christmas, Easter, and national holidays. If you want to go to la Gomera, you should fly to Tenerife Sur and take the fast ferry in Los Cristianos. There are also ferry connections to the other smaller islands, but it takes longer. If you have the time, you can come by boat from Cádiz (Andalusia) and there are even some cruise lines that visit several islands, apart from Madeira, Morocco and Southern Spain.Once you are in the islands, you should rent a car. The price is considerabily lower than in the...
