Rent a car. If you want to stay in one resort, fine, but the island has more to offer. Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz are worth a look. The volcano is a great day out on a clear day. Get out and see more of the place. Try www.holidayautos.co.uk/ for a quote.

The best way is by plane. You can island hop around the canaries, they are all relatively close together. Ferry services go from Tenerife to La Gomera and to Gran Caneria. The local buses on Tenerife are excellent and very cheap.

Really more or less the only way to get to or from the Canary Islands is by plane. Tons of charter flights operate from all over Europe, as this is one of the most popular beach vacation spots for Europeans. There isn't much to the Canary Islands to get around in. The beach resorts comfortably allow you to walk everywhere over the short distances. Only if you want to break away from the resort life and head inland will you need some significant transportation. Myself, I did it with a rented car and had no problems, but cycling or hiking might also be an interesting alternative for those that way inclined.

The neighbouring island of Lanzarote can be reached by ferry from Corralejo in around 40 minutes. It is well worth the trip. The Montañas del Fuego (Fire Mountains), the heart of Lanzarote, are like a moonscape. Many science fiction films have been shot here. There are more than 100 volcanoes on approx. 50 square kilometres; they arose during the great eruptions 1730-36. In 1968, the region was declared a national park, the Parque Nacional de Timanfaya. There is a team of camels to take visitors on an excursion into the world of the volcanoes.

There are many scheduled flights departing from the UK, which fly directly to the four largest Canary Islands. You can fly direct from Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, Norwich, Exeter, Bristol, Cardiff, Birmingham and East Midlands airports.Hire a car to see the best of what each island has to offer. The more remote regions have some real jewels to offer in terms of culture, scenery and gastronomic delights.

by Pete_Barnett

The bus service on Gran Canaria is excellent. There is a regular bus service from Maspolomas in the south to Las Palmas in the north every twenty minutes - last bus from Las Palmas is 21.20 hrs. It is also a very good way to get to 'out of the way' villages and seeing some of the more interesting places on the island.

Fly. Most islands have a small airport.hire a car or jeep. Car hire is very very cheap in the Canary Islands, but don't forget to drive on the right hand side. This gives you the opportunity to see more of the island and get a real feel for the place. I'd definitely reccommend it. For those who don't want to drive, there's also regular buses, plenty of taxis and you could even walk - there's usually lots of things to do within walking distance.

Loads of package flights from the UK. It seems that Las Palmas airport is only open on Saturday, Sunday and Monday though. It's a 4 - 41/2 hour flight. Many flights leave in the middle of the night and vacate the hotel room by midday leaving many uncomfortable hours to kill. One idea is to miss the included transfer and hire a car, arranging to leave it at the airport in the evening. It worked a treat, saw all the island and arrived at check in before everyone else- best seats on plane home!Hire a car, or the busses go just about everywhere, pre arranged tours from your rep are very overpriced, but you knew that already didn't you?
