On the islands several companies offer camel tours. It is obviously a tourist trap. I still love camels though.
the bus system is pretty good, but i really do recommend renting a car. you'll miss the really good beaches if you don't.

If you are going on an excursion there is usually a free bus, but if you aren't going far, then i recommend walking.
La Palma being an island can be best reached by airplane.
On our way back. In frustration over that I didn't take a picture of our plane down to Spain, I took this picture at once we got out of the airport-busses. Isn't it a beauty? =)
Rent a small car, you can see more then, But driving in mountains is dangerous.
