The reason of the presence of Catalan architects in Comillas, as Joan Martorell and Antoni Gaudí is that the marquis of Comillas made his fortune in Barcelona and was established there. He made part of the cultural elite of the city, which was at that time marvelled by the wonders of Modernism.
In fact, the present marquis of Comillas is also count of Güell, as they descend also from the famous family that supported Gaudí .
- Historical Travel
Gaudí's architecture is characterised by the use of elements of nature as decoration. The walls and roof are decorated with tiles depicting flowers or leaves, achieving a colourful and beautiful ensemble.
Plaza Joaquín del Piélago and Ayuntamiento
While my friends went into the tourist office I explored this plaza. It was lovely!
The tourist office is located in the ayuntamiento (city hall) which is pictured here.
- Budget Travel
Comillas has a nice old town, no worse than Santilla's, which is about 20 minutes by car.
Walk around the streets and have some tapas with wine could be a good lunch option.

Acces to the University
The pontificial university stands on top of a hill that dominates the whole town. The views are awesome.
The beach of Comillas
The small beach next to the fishing harbour is very quiet off the season, but usually crowded during the summer.
