One of the most important Gothic churches in Cantabria. It has been continuously modified along the centuries with many renaissance and barroque additions. It stands on the highest point of the old town and made part of the defensive system, hence its fortress-like appearance.

    La Salvé Beach

An inmense sand arrow that separates the Asón stuary (ría de Treto) from the ocean. Now it is an urban beach, as many appartment buildings have been built along the beach promenade, but it is so large, that it still keeps a certain wild appearance.

La Salvé is one of the largest beaches in North Spain. It is so large and wide that even in the high season, when all the crowds arrive to enjoy the sea and the sand, you still can find some lonely corners away from the crowds.

From the beach you can enjoy the fabulous view of the Buciero mount that protects the bay from the Atlantic storms.

    Plaza Cachupín y Ayuntamiento

We stayed on this plaza and really enjoyed looking at and listening to it (ha ha)! It's the center of town and clearly (or audibly) the hub of Laredo. Sitting on a bench during the day or peering from one of our Juliette balconies onto it, it was fascinating to see Laredo life in action. It provides you with a cross-section of its residents who clearly enjoy the opportunity to live in a beautiful seaside town.

The old town is composed of six streets (ruas) that date back to the Middle Ages and that were protected by a wall.

Situated in the backyard of the church, the cemetery has spectacular views over the beach. It is no doubt a good place to retire for eternity.

    Another gate

Some of the gates of the town wall have been incorporated into the buildings as the walls lost their defensive function.

I love fishing ports, always so picturesque with the colourful boats. In spite of tourism, fishing remains one of the main activities of the town.

    Beach, baby!

Laredo is a beach community. There are miles of it with a lovely walkway that we strolled along on our first night here.

Right by our rental apartment there was this delightful street named Cuesta del Infierno, which means "Hell's Hill." We descended on it daily.
