Excellent base to explore the Picos de Europa

by breughel Updated Oct 3, 2007

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: The small town (1.500 inhabitants) of Potes is in the centre of the Liebana region, an area that is surrounded by the spectacular mountains of the Picos de Europa, with peaks up to 2.648m at Torre Cerredo, running streams and rivers forming a national park of about 65.000 ha. Potes is the meeting point of four valleys and an excellent base to explore this mountain area of 40 by 20 km. Potes is at about 40 km from the coast but the road through the La Hermida canyon is difficult.
The main excursions from Potes are the river Deva stream upwards to Fuente Dé and the belvedere El Cable at 1.900 m and the N621 southwest wards to Puerto de San Glorio (1.600 m) to reach the belvedere Mirador de Llesba.
Parking at Potes is easy on the place near the church (occupied by the market on Mondays!).

    La comida /

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

You can not talk of Potes and Liébana if you not mention their food
There are many and very good restaurants , so we will l tell you some typical food of this region to help you to decide
    - Cocido Lebaniego: A stew made with chickpeas, cabbage ,pork (ear, chorizo, blood sausage , ham bone and bacon), beef and the "stuffing" made of bread crumbs, parsley and eggs
Take first the soup "de cocido" and then cocido with stuffing. Great for a cold day
    - Steak: From cows fed in the mountains , 1.5 kg and not too cooked
    - Borono: They make a paste of corn flower and pork blood. It is served as fried slices with fried apples
    - Cheese: We have Bejes blue cheese, type "Picon" and quesucos ( small cheeses) of cow, sheep and goat
    - Dessert: the Frisuelos and Canónigos that are custard with meringue
    - Drink: You start with Port tea, as digestive and continue with the wines of the area, the "tostadillo" that is a sweet wine and Orujo ( distilled with a high alcohol content)
