Fuente De is just 23 kms up into the Picos from Potes. There is a Parador hotel for those looking for a luxury stay, but the main reason is the cable-car that takes you up from 1070 metres to 1823 metres in 3 mins 40 secs. Once on top there is a superb vista and quite a few hiking trails start from here. I even saw a couple of mountain bikers who were going to make the descent. At the top, called El Cable there is a restaurant with a panoramic view.

Price is 14euros for a return ticket per person.

Potes - Desfiladero de la Hermida.

On your way out from Potes towards Santander or the other way round, the road follows the Deva river and cuts through another sublime canyon. About 15 kms from Potes is a small turn-out where you can park (it's the only spot so don't miss it. On the right of the lot are some steps that take you down to the river level. Apparently the river is heavy with salmon and trout and you may catch sight of the fish (we didn't). But it's a nice spot to take a breather.

Once on top of the teleferico at Fuente De there is a myriad of trails to take, even all the way back down to the bottom (13.5 kms) if you want. We just took one of the shorter there and back hikes to the Hotel/Refuge Avila. This 7 kms round trip takes in some fine scenery, passes a royal residence and takes roughly 3 hours including a stop for beer and a sandwich.

    The hotel/refuge tel. no is 942 730 999

    Cerezas,nueces,castañas-Cherries, nuts, chestnuts

by elpariente Written Jul 4, 2012

June is the month of the cherries in this zone, since there are villages that are very high they say that they do not mature up to San Pedro (June 29), but be sure that before in any path where you pass giving a walk, you will find a cherry-tree with delicious cherries that they know as "before"
This happens in June, but when September and October comes you have the nuts and the chestnuts that you may find them everywhere
Either we can not forget, their season, the grapes, apples, peaches, figs....
Normally people is nice and if you take just some fruit to eat in the field they will not complain to you
