If you would like to have a picnic ... - or maybe just have one low budget meal so you can splurge at the Miramar ;-) - there is a little market which can be hard to find down the Paseo de la Barquera between the San Vicente de la Barquera bridge and the sanctuary - just head down Paseo de la Barquera and look to your left coming from the bridge.
This place won't really jump at you, however, you have to look closely as it's in a very low floor at the bottom of an apartment building - note the photo.
Favorite Dish: Jamon Serrano, fresh bread, and cheese - you need to ask for the bread at the deli, or ask the lady at the cash register.
They also had an adequate selection of wines.
The fruit is good, the friendliness of the staff is contagious. Can't go wrong.
I arrived to San Vicente de la Barquera in the evening and I was tired from a long trip from Valencia and going down the wrong bridge to find the hotel, and had worked up an appetite. I asked the concierge to recommend a *good, quiet* place to eat, not too over run with tourists, and they recommended the Restaurant for the Hotel Miramar. This place was perfect, and I returned there once more to enjoy the excellent seafood and the view of the ria, however, this is not just a seafood restaurant - everything they serve was delicious!
Don't miss the photo with the view - you'll be convinced this is where you want your special meal of the trip to take place (assuming no rain). Even if it rains, however, the view from inside the restaurant will be wonderful.
The service is excellent and will advise you if you're ordering too much food like I tried to do. They're courteous and friendly. Do sit outside, wether night or day, and enjoy!
This is not one of the least expensive places to eat, but food here is so good I highly recommend splurging - you will be glad you did!
Favorite Dish: The Merluza was awesome, and the shrimp and vegetable scramble divine! (See photos). Couple it with a good bottle of wine, or try the house wine which is a good selection. The Rodaballo was also excellent, along with the salad with asparagus.
Desserts were very tempting, but after such huge meals I opted for some fruit.
Mainly based on the products of the sea, with fish and seafood of great quality, the gastronomy in San Vicente de la Barquera has a recognized reputation and a wide offer of restaurants.
Many of them are to be found at the Avenida Generalísimo.
One problem for non-smokers is the fact that the new Spanish legislation on smoking is not applied in favour of the non-smokers in most restaurants.
The "flavour of the sea" suffers from the flavour of cigarettes, when not cigars.
