    ALTAMIRA CAVES
    Discovered in 1879 by chance by Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola, this caves are a masterpiece of paleolitic art (14.000 years ago!). To see the original ones you have to fill a form and wait for more than 3 years!!, as they only admit very small groups with guide.

    COLEGIATA (Santillana)
    A huge romanic church and monastery at the end of the main street, in Plaza de las Arenas. The cloister definetly deserves a visit. Entrance 400 ptas. No shorts or swimming suits allowed.

    SANTILLANA DEL MAR
    This tiny village (no more than 6 or 7 streets!!) is a real open air museum. Its name could be literally translated as 'Saint-Plain of the Sea', and so they call it the village of the 3 lies, as it is not saint, is in a valley and it is not by the sea. It was founded about 1.200 years ago. Its paved streets are surrounded by magnificient stone palaces.

    THE NEO-CAVES
    To solve this problem, they have built a clone of the caves, called Neo-Cave, which can be visited from 9.30 to 17.30, except mondays. The entrance (400 ptas, kids free) includes a guided tour through the 'new' caves, and a visit to the museum.
    As they are recently opened, it is very important to make reservations in advance. Otherwise you could make a loooong line for more than 2 hours and end up without ticket. Reservations can be made at any 'Banco de Santander', at phone 902 24 24 24 / 902 11 22 11, or at the web www.bancosantander.es , www.bsch.es, or at www.bancosantanderbsch.es

  • The following link points to the city street map.
    At the bottom of the page, you can search for:
    * callejero = street index drop-list
    * lugares de interes = points of interest (neighbourhoods, parks and beaches, banks and public places, transport...)
    * codigos postales = postcodes
    * edificios de interes = interesting buildings (drawings of all these buildings with links to detailed info)
    * hotels

    All these links are only in Spanish, but the graphic information is good.

    Visit the beautiful Beaches where you can find excellnet conditions for swimming, diving, windsurfing and gambling in the casino nearby. Take a Walk through the Parks of Peninsula Matalena in the Paseo Pereda. Visit the Cathedral and the oceanic museum. More tips below.

    When I first came to Santander, I didn´t expect anything from this place, because I wanted to work in Andalucia. But after the first days I fell in love with this beautyful town and the nice people there.
    Just stay open-minded, take a walk in the city centre,
    get some tapas in the pubs and let it flow !

    The "Bay" of Santander

    Although they call it a bay, Santancer actually faces a vast estuary. This is indeed the largest estuary in the Northern coast of Spain, although none of the rivers that converge here is significantly long or mighty. To the South, the most important tributaries are the rías of Solía, San Salvador and Astillero, to the East, the rías of El Carmen and Raos and, finally the most important of all, the ría de Cubas, which is how the mouth of the river Miera is known.

    It is said that centuries ago the Bay of Santander was double its current size. Different land reclamation projects for residential, industrial and port facilities have modelled its shape, particularly on the side where the city of Santander stands. Currently, the bay is 9 km long and 5 km wide. About half of the population of Cantabria lives around the bay but, there are still a few pockets of swamps and lagoons where you can still enjoy the wildlife.

    The estuary is protected by a long sandbar known as El Puntal, which makes for a good spot to spend a beach day. It almost closes the estuary from the open sea and prevents the existence of marine currents or high waves (except when a strong South wind blows) but also difficults the access to the port of Santander.

    The Bay can be enjoyed from most of the city's waterfront and, particularly, from the promenade that connects the old port with the beaches and residential areas of El Sardinero offering fantastic views of its beaches and the natural backdrop of snow-capped mountains.

    Santillana del Mar, picturesque town but ful of tourists. The quality of the restaurants was also much less then the restaurants in smaller, less crowded-with-tourists, places. Very good place for taking beautiful pictures!
