by chrishc This palace commands a prominent position on the peninsular. The city gave the palace to Alphonse XIII as a person and not as royalty so he was able to sell it back to the city in the 1970s as it did not belong to the royal domain. Built in 1909 it looks very Scottish. Leave a Comment

There is a sign asking for him not to be fed! by chrishc The little zoo is really quite cute, there is not much there but it is easy to get too and the animals are quite cute. This guy was a bit of a character. There were also penguins and I think there is supposed to be a bear. The seal pool was very full due to the large amount of water that was crashing over the sea wall. Leave a Comment

by chrishc The large bay that is home to the port of Santander is partly guarded by this peninsular, upon which are the Magdalena palace, zoo and riding grounds. Also there are some boats from pioneering sailors. It can be accessed by a little road train bt to be honest it is a nice little walk round. Leave a Comment

by SirRichard CABARCENO ZOO This original zoo has been recently made in an old iron open air mines. They have used the natural holes used not long ago to extract the iron to house the animals in a rather 'natural and free' environment. Elephants, leopards and lions in the north of Spain. Just 1/2 hour away from Santander, heading south. Leave a Comment

La Lonja is the place where the fish is sold when it arrives to the port. It is located at the entrance of Santander in the area of La Marga. Tourists never go there since is an industrial area but around La Lonja you can taste some of the best fish plates in town and at a good price ! Leave a Comment

by chrishc These are boats used by Vital Alzar on voyages made using authentic materials to prove that pacific islanders could have made the journey to South America (or vice versa will look it up) Leave a Comment

by wiegandg Trekking in the Picos de Europa: you´ll feel like in the Alps of Switzerland: Just half an hour away from the ocean: cows, snowy mountains - just a great place for trekking etc. On the border to Asturias 2-3 hours from Santander. Visit Potes - the 'capital' of Picos de Europa - nice village. Leave a Comment

Visitors who are still not worn out after visiting the Park of the Madeleine and the Sardinero beaches (or who happen to have some additional days in Santander), can continue their stroll along the sea until the lighthouse in Cape Major, which is already out of the city limits. They will pass by the Mataleñas Park, located on the Cape Minor promontory, and the small and scenic Mataleñas cove (only accessible via a very steep staircase). The final destination of the stroll is the lighthouse and the superb cliffs swept by the storms and winds. Leave a Comment
