Rather than tapas, Santander and the rest of Northern Spain prefer to have pinchos to accompany their midday appéritif. They tend to be more elaborate and the name refers to the stick that holds the food. The etiquete is similar in all the places and is based on a trust relationship: you take or ask for as many pinchos as you like from the trays displayed at the counter and you tell the waiter at the end how many they were, so it is important to keep track of all your consumptions.
There are many places scattered around the city to sample pinchos with a glass of beer or a vermouth, but one of the most popular for the quality and the large variety of the offer is El Diluvio, which is located in front of the Mercado del Este. It attracts a crowd of office workers from the nearby area and is usually cramped before lunch.
The food does not attain the level of sophistication and innovation of the most prestigious bars in Saint Sebastian or Bilbao, but it is quite satisfactory nonetheless.

you get a good welcome when you enter! Johnnie knows your English so gets you a pint instead of a small one! The works for 6 Euros. Doner, chips and Salad.Johnnie never stops talking, laughing and working!!! I will visit Johnnie again! Cheers mate!
Stayed there for a good hour, walked away, realised we hadn't paid, popped back, paid and then Johnnie bought us a drink... Good lad
Favorite Dish: The works, big plate of Kebab meat (Doner) Chips, Salad and the hottest Chilli Sauce in the world.. I won't mention the chilli sauce too much, I did have a problem the next day! Man was that hot!

Santander is s seap[ort. That means toons of fresh fish.
Try always fish on season. My favourite is white tuna (bonito). The season starts in august and last until october.
The best ways to try it is grilled (bonito a la plancha) or in tomato sauce (bonito con tomate) .
One local dish is a pate made out of cabracho fish and shrimps. Cabracho is the ugliest fish you can imagine but is very tasty. The pate is called "pudding the cabracho" and is served as a racion (large tapa). This is a must !

This is a very interesting place. It is located next to "Faro Mayor" (big lighthouse) and it has one of the nicest views in Santander. It is a bar/cafe run by ex-foreign legion soldiers.
People come here to enjoy drinks and tapas "Al Fresco"
looking at the ocean from the top of a cliff.
This is a must. Normally you will find only locals here since
it is relatively unknown to tourists. It is a few miles from the citty but there is a bus going there. You can also take a taxi.
It should noty be more than 5 euros from Sardinero beach.
Favorite Dish: Try the hot chocolate, or enjoy a cana (draft beer) with rabas (deep fried calamary).

There are many tapas bars in Santander but Bodegas Uriarte is my favourite. Recomended are the "Albondigas"
(meatballs) and the "Gambas al ajillo" (garlic shrimps).
The price is good and the portions bigger than normal.
The atmosphere is also very nice but be prepared to smoke second hand. That's inevitable in Spain.
Favorite Dish: Albondigas

We chose this place as it was full of locals and the place was buzzing. There were loads of staff and they were very quick to help.
Thw set menu was very good value at only 7.50 Euros. It was three courses with wine and water too!!! Each course was of a large size.
Favorite Dish: One of the courses was a Chorizo and bean stew which was yummy.

This trendy seafront restaurant is a lovely place to enjoy lunch. We only had the tapas but the meals we saw other diners eating looked really good.
The staff are friendly and efficient.
Choose a table by the window to appreciate the setting even more.
Favorite Dish: We had the tapas on toasts and they were scrummy.

Tapas bar on the street side, fixed-price meal in the middle and sumptuous lunch spot just in front of the sea, overlooking the "sardinero" beach.
Favorite Dish: Fish !!!!! just ask for fish (pescado) and wait ... accep also wine advice, it was really interesting.

So-so food and horrible service, but this restaurant did have three good things going for it:
1) It was literally underneath the hotel I was staying in.
2) The pizza was pretty good.
3) The sangria was super cheap--6 euro for a small pitcher that held 5-6 drinks worth; 8 for a large pitcher.
One night I drank a whole small pitcher by myself. Not the best sangria in Spain, but quite drinkable for the price.
Favorite Dish: Pizza.
