Durante el verano hay una liga de "traineras" donde las distintas ciudades costeras compiten remando y existe una gran rivalidad
El origen de este reporte se remonta a la época en que salían las barcas a remo a cazar las ballenas que se acercaban a la costa
On Summer time there is a league of "Traineras" where the different coastal towns compete on rowing and there is a great rivalry
The origin of this sport comes from the days when the boats went out rowing to the sea to hunt the whales that were approaching to the coast

Picos de Europa are the highest mountains in the area.
In a clear day you can see them from Santander to the west.
They reach 2800 meters and they are a young formation of limestone. It's full or vertical walls very popular among professional and amateur climbers. The most famous peak for climbers is "Naranjo de Bulnes". This one is considered particularly challenging so you are guaranteed to get some adrenaline pumped into your system if you try it.
On an easier level, there are also many routes among the peaks. Some routes are easier than others. One of the easiest and very popular is "Ruta del Cares" which takes you along the river Cares
for 12 km and surrounded by spectacular mountains.

This picture doesn't really do the waves justice, but Santander seemed to be a mecca for surfers, at one time there must have been a hundred in the water.
It was quite fun to see them racing for the same wave and the unsuccessful plunge into the briny.
Equipment: Seemed to be a long planky thing with a bit sticking out of the bottom.
I think they may have been kinky as they were all wearing rubber.
A 4x4 (or SUV) seemed obligatory.

This is the home to the City's Primera Division soccer team in La Liga.
When we visited they were currently bottom and lost away at Atletico Madrid so we did not get to see either a game or the crowds, which I imagine would be substantial.
They have since rallied and are approaching mid-table respectability.
Spanish football is of a very high standard and it wuld be worth a visit to a game in this fine stadium.

Racing Santander is the local football team in the city.
Our hotel overlooked the ground but they were not playing at home while we were there otherwise I can imagine how one evening would hvae been spent
They are at present fourth from bottom in the Spanish First Division having beaten Zaragoza at the weekend
Equipment: Bring your scarfs and whistles

This sort of beach tennis is very popular among locals and played even in the most crowded beaches, like the First of El Sardinero.
