The fastest way to reach Somo and El Puntal are the small boats called "Los Reginas", that you can catch at Santander's old quay, by the palacete del Embarcadero.

The ride is very enjoyable, as the waters of the bay are usually calm and the sights are always awesome. Besides, boat riders seem to be very skillful. At least, this one managed to steer all the way back to Santander with only his feet.

It´s a small town- watch your p´s and q´s!

Being a very small town, everybody knows everybody. The staff at yur hotel are bestfriends with or family of the people that own the bar you go drinking in. EVERYTHING gets around, and it´s not long before all the locals know your name and what you did last night.

There´s no anonmity in Somo. For example i´d only been there a week before everyone knew my name, how long i was here for, where i ate, what i ate, weather or not i went to the beach and the fact i got a throat infection and couldn´t finish my surfing lessons! NO JOKE.

And i kept myself to myself. I went into Santander for a night out and somehow it got back to the BNB owner in Somo that I had one too many, and I hadn´t even stayed in somo that night!

Be careful! The locals are judgemental. If your kids misbehave, or you get sick, or come home late, everyone will know and make a character assesment of you.

The beach of Somo is fairly open to the sea and some times waves and sea currents can be strong.

There are beach wards during the summer months, but if they are not on service, do not overestimate your swimming abilities.

Walk on the beach

Favorite thing: Walk on the lonely beaches of Somo and El Puntal at dusk and see how the lights of the city start to twinkle. When you are the last to leave the beach, it really looks like an endless stripe of sand.

Favorite thing: The Puntal is covered by sand dunes swept by the wind. This fragile ecosystem hosts rare plant species perfectly adapted to the hard conditions.

Beachgoers are required to respect and maintain the dunes.
