León Things to Do

  • Saint Marcos

The Hostal de San Marcos now a parador hotel. Was one of the chief landmarks on The Way of Saint James to Santiago .

  • Leon Cathedral

Santa Maria de Leon cathedral also known as " The House of Light ". Built on the site of a roman bath. The Leon cathedral is one of the important cathedrals on the way of Saint James.

  • The Streets of Leon at Dusk

We left a local fair and wandered through the streets in Leon as dusk arrived. The lighting and crisp Fall air made these quaint streets seem so inviting. We found a wonderful wine and cheese shop and its owner sent us over to a plaza where we could find tapas. The sun had almost set and the lighting was moody and beautiful. It was one of those...

  • Like a Beacon in the Night

Leon's cathedral is beautifully illuminated by night. The very light stone that it's constructed from, when contrasted to a dark night, really stands out.As we drove out of Leon, it stood out in the distance. You could certainly easily find this town by night!

  • Festival!

Aside from the pottery fair there was also a weekend festival going on. Spain is full of these and it's just wonderful to see everyone out and about and enjoying themselves. Dancers were on stage doing some sort of local jig... Dare I say they were jiggy?

  • Gaudi's Casa Botines

There's a beautiful castle-like Gaudi building right on Plaza del Obispo, in Leon. The details, like all Gaudi buildings, is unique, dreamlike and beautiful. The detail on the fencing around it is amazing.

León Restaurants

  • Café Gotico - Leon

Situated in a small side street off the pedestrian zone, there was a warm welcome for us. Run by a young couple that went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. Food was delicious and a nice drop of wine to go with it. 26 euros for the two of us inc. wine and 1 coffee.

  • Best Pizzas in Leon

These pizzas saved my life for a year living in Leon- if you are fed up with the fish in Spain go here for a breather! The Romana with onion!! Askt that Angel personally makes it- he's a genius! And you get a free chat along with your feed!

  • Tapas with a drink downstairs is...

Beautiful atmosphere with a wide range of wines and dishes available. If you don't feel like sitting in for a meal a take away bottle of wine and a speciality pizza is just worth the trip. The garlic and chilli spaghetti and any flavour of pizza- they're all beautiful.

León Nightlife

  • True Spanish Style

Before you hit the Barrio Humedo for some real drinking, I would recommend going to Seaki Bar first. They are known for their champagne cocktail (only 1,20 Euro) and they pile on the free tapas- definately my favourite tapa bar! The staff are very friendly and service is quick despite the crowds that are usually here.

  • GLAMourous

Boogie all night long. This night club is great if you want to dance the night away. Glam usually hosts shows which include fire breathing and stilt walking- something to make the place a bit different! Casual or if u want u can dress up

  • All nighters all the time!!

This is the place to be when darkness falls in Leon. There an amazing amount of bars to suit all tastes- and the beauty about the bars in Leon is with every drink you get FREE tapas! There are clubs, bars and cafes- whatever you fancy Leon is sure to have it. Whatever you want- most of the students just wear out what they were wearing that day- or...

León Transportation

  • Buses to Madrid and Barajas airport.

From León there are some buses direct to Barajas. We thought this a good option as we had a night flight and would therefore have more time in León (and less hassle basically);-).Of course nothing is simple so.... be aware that in August seats were booked up days in advance! The bus we originally wanted left about 9pm but instead we had to take the...

  • I went by rail from Vigo...

I went by rail from Vigo -about six and a half hours of which well over 5 are through glorius scenery. The bit nearest to León is actually the other part and is dire.I returned to Madrid via Ávila and only the part between Ávila and Madrid is scenic. The best part of the rest came during thick mist!Walk(Photo - Botines house - Gaudi)

  • Best way to get to Leon is by...

Best way to get to Leon is by train from Madrid. Buses are a good option also. The most interesting way to get to Leon is to walk from Roncesvalles, the Pyrenees. If you do not believe me, go and ask the pilgrim's you meet in Leon.

León Shopping

  • Lots of specialist foodshops

This area is seventh heaven for foodies...especially if you enjoy everything porcine! Chorizo, blood sausage etc

  • Mall on the outskirts

Has it All! This place is great for getting things at a reasonable price- especially great for students living here because it has all your needs under one roof- like a mall! Has foreign food which is great if you're homesick

  • Mantecadas (Astorga)

These typical biscuits from Astorga can be found also in other villages of Leon.In each box come about 12 of them, costing around 3-4 euros. They come in plastic bags, so are easy to keep.

León Local Customs

  • TAPAS...Only order one drink!

León is a great city for tapas because it is one of the few that serves it free with every drink! The custom is to not stay in any one bar for long as each have their one or two specialities. If you want to stuff yourself for free but not get too drunk...order a small beer called a 'corto' and the tapas will arrive a couple of minutes later. Pay...

  • Semana Santa

The Thursday night before Good Friday the people of Leon hold the best annual march ever- The Drunkards Parade! It is very popular to start at midnight at the Cathedral, take part in the parade and stay out all night and stay up for the Good Friday marches which start very early in Plaza Mayor.

  • Gregorian Chants

By the Hostel we stayed in Carrizo de la Ribera, there was a Monastery (S. XV) where the nuns sang Gregorian Chants every evening at 21:00. It is a moving experience, in a little church, with just 2 persons from the village, all the church in darkness except 2 big candels and all those echoes sounding in the high ceilings. The pic is not too good...

León Warnings and Dangers

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The most danger thing to worry about is being careful with the sunburns (get a good suntan cream, expecially if your skin is not dark at all), spraines and ankle/wrist.. twists doing trekking or whatever you do. Get a cap, expecially on summer !! Don´t be too much worried about pick-poquets, it´s usually not a problem in here. That is more common in big cities, not in the camp and villages.

  • The province of León is...

The province of León is crossed by the Santiago road. For this reasons, thousands of pilgrims, and nowadays tourists, have crossed these harsh lands seeking spirituality and forgiveness. Apart from the capital itself, other important stages are: - Astorga (see picture) with its lovely cathedral and the bishop's palace (a unique building designed by...

León Off The Beaten Path

  • Take a local train

There is a second station (F.E.V.E not R.E.N.F.E) that has a regular service to the valleys and small mountain range to the north of León. There are probably many serious walks you could do. We got off at Vecilla and there isn't much to it...two restaurants, a shop next to the station, a bar, campsite and a small artgallery/local centre. We came...

  • Tombstones Museum

In the lower floor of the San Marcos Cloister you can find an original exhibition of tombstones, from roman times to the 19th century. Most of them are outside, so they can be visited for free enterinf from the Parador. Some others are inside the Museo de Leon, so you will have to pay 1,2 euros to see them.

  • Garden at the Posada del Marques

At the hostel where we stayed in Carrizo de la Ribera (Posada del Marques) there was a charming little garden in the backyard, where you could find a little brook, some old tres, grass... it was really cold when we went, but I guess in summer it must be a perfect place for a siesta!

León Sports & Outdoors

  • Ping Pong

In the hostel we stayed in there was a ping pong room. As the weather outside was really cold, we played a lot here, and even organized champinships amongst the people of our group...
