The monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos at the SE of Covarrubias, is said to have originally been founded in 593 by the Visigothic King, Recaredo I (the one that introduced the Catholic religion in Spain).
The Visigoth church was destroyed by the Moors, and rebuilt in 1042 by Santo Domingo.
