Tordesillas is a nice village situated about 31km southwest of Valladolid. It has an important historical meaning to Portugal and Spain, since a treaty was signed here. The palace where the treaty was signed is opened to visitors. Basically, that treaty - Tratado de Tordesillas - formalized which part of the "New World" (back in the discoveries years) belonged to Spain and which part belonged to Portugal. Apart from the palace, the village is nice and pleasant for a stroll. The surroundings fields and plains also provide beautiful landscapes.

Just between Aranda de Duero and Valladolid.

All this area is famous as well for the wine yards denomination 'Ribera del Duero', where you will be able to visit some of the best 'bodegas and wines'.

Peñafiel is a town, between half and one hour from Valladolid by car. A highway is being built, who will make the trip even faster.

The first thing you see, when you are near the town, is the castle, placed over a hill, which dominates all the town. You can visit it, and the Museum of Wine placed inside the castle: Peñafiel is the capital of the wine producing area of 'Ribera del Duero'; several wineyards of the area can also be visited.

Inside the town, you should also visit the 'Plaza del Coso', considered by its inhabitants the older bullfighting ring of Spain (it is square, instead of round). There is also an Archeological Museum, where you can see the life of the pre-roman inhabitants of the place (vacceos), and the 'Casa de la Ribera', an example of the traditional architecture of Castile, and where you can see a reproduction of the life of rural Spain, 100 years ago.

For more information, you can visit my VT page about Peñafiel itself.

  • Simancas is placed in a strategic place, in the banks of the Duero river.
