Placa de la Vila – The old town.

Walking our way around at the main square.

Before we decided where we wanted to go during the summer of 2012, of course we did some research on Google about Begur and the entire area. One of the things that intrigued me immediately was the fact that there was an old town in the city center of this old medieval village. Placa de la Vila lies at the heart of this beautiful medieval hilltop town of Begur. Here stands the parish church and on one side are several nice bars. Unlucky we were not able to visit the village on a Wednesday as there is a weekly market held at the Placa de la Vila and traditional dances often take place on summer evenings. But still we wholeheartedly recommend a visit. The natural center of this old town definitely is the Plaça de la Vila.

Other places of interest right at the Placa de la Vila will be found if you just look up to the beautiful facades of the surrounding buildings. Maybe it is a good tip to have a cold refreshment at one of the terraces. We sat down on a comfortable chair at the terrace of Classic Begur Hotel and just looked around and enjoyed the vibrancy of this beautiful spot.

Address: Placa de la Vila, 17255 Begur.
Directions: Park the car at Camino del Mar (it’s free) and walk your way to the city center. You can’t miss the central square, because just walk towards the church as it towers over the village.

Placa de la Vila – The busy center.

Do keep looking up to the beautiful facades.

Without a doubt is the Plaça de la Vila the busy center of the town and a true tourist trap. But is this a good reason to avoid it and not visit it? No, not at all. You can also put this main square in the tip section "Must see"! And I can also tell you why :)

All around this square you will see magnificent medieval buildings. For example the Casa de Vile, we read that this particular building was first designed in the 12th century and was intended to create a safe place of comfort for the residents of Begur, even whilst under attack. In recent times the beautiful building has become home to a hotel. And to be honest, the location is just great! Another thing you will notice immediately is that you can hike your way up into the many narrow streets that are all seem to end up at the Place de la Vila. It’s also a joy to make the central square the starting point for a climb to the ruined castle. One thing we saw and loved was that some old local men were sitting at the bench along the church. It is probably their everyday routine. From them we learned that during the 1950s, some scenes of the film Suddenly Last Summer, starring Elizabeth Taylor, were made right here.

Placa de la Vila – The main square.

Begur is a medieval village which is being overlooked by the impressive Castle of Begur. The area was a Greek colony before it was won and treasured by the Romans. The castle is the clearest remainder of that era. Successive migrations since have confirmed what the local people have always known - this is a village that has a lot to offer! The old town is Gothic in origin as can be deduced from the pointy arches of some of the windows and doorways. The main road into the village winds upwards towards the Eglesia Parroquial de Sant Pere (the church) and is a bit strenuous, but worth the effort! Once arrived near the church you can see the impressive ramparts of the castle and have some views out over the surrounding countryside.

Once hiking your way around in the old town of Begur you can’t miss out on the main square (called Plaça de la Vila) on which all these beautiful historical buildings are situated. Plaça de la Vila is the natural centre of the city of Begur: a stage for various minor and major events, a reference point, a meeting place and the starting point or destination for walkers who want to discover the city. Historically speaking, the square began to operate in a shape and size similar to what we see today in the early years of the 11th century.
