I recommend that you check websites of some point-to-point airline companies. You can get tickets as cheap as 20€!

El Prat is the international airport of BCN.
Arriving: It is rather close to the city, there are fequent buses (Aerobus) to town (Pl.Catalunya), that take about 40 minutes.
Departing: If you arrive on time, there are a lot of shops and cafes here to spend your time. You could even leave your souvenir shopping for the last minutes, as here you will find some really attractive shops.

Flying into Barcelona is probably the easiest way to get to the city. The airport is quite small as it does not serve as a major international hub. Most of the planes arriving here are smaller. The airport is quite nice designed with marble floors. Numerous shops await the visitor within. Also the Renfe train connects right to the airport and brings you to city with minimal duress.
We flew to Europe with Lufthansa and connected in Munich for our flight to Barcelona.

The airport of Barcelona is situated in a nearer town named 'el Prat del Llobregat', the airport is called 'El prat', you acn easly access there by car or by bus or by train.
Buses leaves from catalunya square, blue buses, trains leave every 30 minutes from Plaça catalunya or snats estació stations, always in platform 1, and every of the trains going to the aiport have in a small screen in front wrote 'AEROPORT'.

There is a cheap (3,45 euros) and convenient bus from the El Prat airport to the centre. It leaves every 15 minutes and takes you there in 30-40 minutes.
From the airport, look for the blue sign of "Aerobus". From the centre, take it at Placa de Catalunya (in front of El Corte Ingles), Sants Railway Station or Placa de Espanya.

My Germanwings flight from Cologne arrived at Barcelona El Prat airport. The airport has 3 terminals and is located about 12 km southwest of the city centre. There is a frequent train service between the airport and the city centre. Single ticket: 2,20 EURO (2003).

Flying is the easiest to get into Barcelona especially because there are quite some low budget companies offering very cheap flights to Barcelona. I flew from Brussels to Barcelona with Virgin Express. I can't recall the exact price anymore, but the price was good. My parents booked a flight to BCN departing at Amsterdam Airport with Easyjet and paid a total of €170.00 which is about $150.00 for 2 return flight!! Another low budget airline co. is Basiq Air also flying from Amsterdam.
It's quite easy to get around the airport because there are signs everywhere and the fact that the airport isn't that big helps too.
From the airport it's about 40 minutes to get to the city with the train. If you think that takes too long you can also take a taxi. They are very cheap. From the city centre to the airport costed us only 15 minutes and 15 Euro's, including bagage. For bagage you have to pay seperate per piece, so keep that in mind.

We went by plane: we were lucky to find VERY cheap tickets!!!
The first days we mainly took the bus but as soon as we descovered the subway, we knew better!!! The metro is very fast and easy.
The best way to discover the center of Barcelona is by food, just wander around through the narrow streets.

Once on the ground in Barcelona you can get to Barcelona-Sants station within 20 minutes by the trains that run every half hour (06:10 to 22:40), otherwise by bus or the reasonably priced taxis. It is worth checking the budget airlines for flights to Barcelona from the UK, although you need to book early to get the best deals.
