The Museu Nacional de l'Arte de Catalunya (MNAC) is located on Montjuic just uphill from the Fira de Barcelona. It can be reached conveniently by several modes of public transportation, including the Bus Turistic.
This museum could take days to see properly, since it encompasses most of the art history of Catalunya. If you have time to see only one section, the Romanesque art display is spectacular. It contains many of the actual mosaics removed from remote Romanesque churches in more rural parts of Catalunya, including S. Climent de Taull. The colorful art gives the lie to the phrase "Dark Ages".
Fondest memory: Barcelona is full of things to love. Besides the MNAC, there is the spectacular Museu Maritim in the old Drassanes where ships were built for the navy of the kings of Aragon. There is the art and architecture of the Modernists, Domenech i Montaner, Gaudi, and others. There are the wonderful Gothic buildings of the Barri Gotic. And there are the people. The staff at the Hotel Colors in the Horta district were especially kind and helpful to me. I recommend them for a pleasant stay in a modern hotel away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
It seems to me that Spaniards always want to give something, even the most practical and necessary things, a special, festive look.
Here in The Netherlands we don't have such sumptuous lanterns to light the streets....
I took this photo coming down from the Museu d'Art de Catalunya that stands high on the Montjuic.....
Fondest memory: Please, don't forget to visit my TRAVELOGUES, they are there for you to enjoy......
I was astonished by the beauty of the 'PALAU DE LA MUSICA CATALANA'. All those colours, I simply loved it!!!
Unfortunaletly you are not allowed to take pictures in the building. But of course you can buy postcards or books.
Favorite thing: The collections here tell the story of Catalan art from the earliest manifestations of Romanesque art to the 1940s. To get there, you need 10 mins walk from Metro - Espanya.
the Catalonian museum national.
In the entrance of the museum you can see this spectacular view. (See picture and see more details in Montjuïc tip).
