    The September 11st in Barcelona

    by cadiana88 Updated Jul 11, 2004 178 reviews
    Barcelona, Spain

It's not Twin Towers day, it's a local celebration, LA DIADA, "Fiesta Nacional de Catalunya", Catalonia's National Day, commemorating a defeat against Borbon troops.
When I was there in Sept 11, 2003; I could see the independence feelings of Catalonia's people. They wish to be an independent country apart from Spain.

Not a cultural tip, and it may sound obvious, but get a guide map if you can. You can walk to a lot of tourist places by foot in Barcelona, but a map is necessary. A guide map will also show you the nearest Metro stops to the tourist places.

For posting those postcards home, look out for the yellow postboxes spread around the city. You can buy stamps to send letters in any tobacconist's ('estanco'), in some hotels or in post offices.
Podéis adquirir los sellos para enviar una carta en cualquier estanco (donde se vende el tabaco), en algunos hoteles o en la misma oficina de correos. Luego se puede tirar en cualquiera de los buzones amarillos distribuidos por toda la ciudad.

    Columbus Monument

At the center of the Plaça de la Porta de Pau (Square of the Gate of Peace) stands a monumental cast iron column set on a stone pedestal and topped by a statue of Christoffel Columbus.

    Independence's feelings

There's an important independence movement in Catalunya.
They want to build a country apart from Spain.
I think that the movement was stronger before Franco dead, now it's declining.

    barcino...

Julia Faventia Augusta Pia Barcino, Barcino in short... this is Barcelona's original name, given by the emperor augusto. Under his rule it became the "capital" of a province in "spain citerior"

Should you need to score whilst in Barcelona, head up to Catalunya Square and have a wander around, it won't be long before you are offered what you want.
