It's not Twin Towers day, it's a local celebration, LA DIADA, "Fiesta Nacional de Catalunya", Catalonia's National Day, commemorating a defeat against Borbon troops.
When I was there in Sept 11, 2003; I could see the independence feelings of Catalonia's people. They wish to be an independent country apart from Spain.
Not a cultural tip, and it may sound obvious, but get a guide map if you can. You can walk to a lot of tourist places by foot in Barcelona, but a map is necessary. A guide map will also show you the nearest Metro stops to the tourist places.
For posting those postcards home, look out for the yellow postboxes spread around the city. You can buy stamps to send letters in any tobacconist's ('estanco'), in some hotels or in post offices.

I think that the movement was stronger before Franco dead, now it's declining.
