Take a train to Girona (where I lived an worked) to escape the crowds. Hike up to the Cathedral and rent a room at the Pensione you'lind if you walk out the left (when looking at the front) side entrance of the Cathedral. Visit the surrounding areas of the Baix Emporda and the Alt Emporda with stops in L'Estartit, Banyoles, Torroella di Montgri, Ulla, Verges, La Tallada and - of course - the Val' Sant Daniel

Day Trip: Daytrip: Tarragona

  • Tarragona is rich with Roman ruins being unearthed and includes an amphitheatre, circ roma (Roman circus praetorium) with great view from the top, archeological passage, cathedral etc. Tarragona can be reached by the Catalunya Express or Regional Express trains from Sants Estacion. A single trip (2006) costs 5.40E and return 9.60E (cheaper). The journey takes about 1 hour. Fares and timetables can be found on the Renfe webpage (www.renfe.es). Alternatively, it is possible to ask at Renfe information* and buy the ticket at Sants Estacion as the trains are pretty frequent.

*There are various informations at Sants Estacion. The Renfe information is next to the ticket booth and deals with Renfe affairs. The Metro information is near the entrance to the Metro (not far from the police post) and at the opposite end from McDonalds. Each information outlet will politely refer you to the other for matters concerning the other. Finally there is a short question booth somewhere for information on the station itself. Its a cool place.

Day Trip: Day Trip: Villafranca del Penedes
This is Cataluya's wine centre. The world famous Torres winery and vinyard can be visited. There is also a Museu del Vi (Wine Museum) in town. Nice during the summer.

It is possible to get there by train from P.Catalunya or Sants Estacion. Costs E3:00 (2006)single trip. Ask for a ticket and departing via at the Renfe office. The stop to get down is Villafranca del Penedes (some stops after Sant Sadurni d'Anoia). It is important to get on the right train that stops there.

From the train station there is a Torres building immediately visible. There is some kind of office entrance on the right hand side of the building. Ask for a map to the wineries there. It is possible to walk to the first one. Alternatively, take a taxi to the first one, then walk to the second one. There is a nice map available also from the tourist office in the centre of town.

Day Trip: Travel by train to the Pyrenee...
Travel by train to the Pyrenee Mountains. I made a daytrip to Puigcerda. It only costed 2030 Pesetas (12 Euro) for a return ticket. Puicerda is in a large valley in the mountains. You can make a flat hike over the border with France. When you want to make a steep hike you should get off the train a few stations earlier.

    girona is a lovely town.

there's a medieval (restored) 'jewish quarter' which is interesting, also some marked walks around the city and the ramparts of the city walls.

a lot of the towns residents were wealthy 30 somethings with kids, it's a nice place to stay for a weekend.
