    Mercat de Bellcaire (Encants Vells)

If you like flea markets, you can go to Mercat de Bellcaire (Encants Vells) next to Glories huge rondabaut. As on any other of these kind of places, be careful with your belongings.

Open Mon, Wen, Fri, Sat morning to early afternoon. Metro/tram: Glories

The website below is in Catalan only, but you can get an idea of what to expect.

Get yourself to one of the local markets

Outside of our flat (see my lodging tips), the most amazing market was steps from the door!

Anything and everything you could want was available! From wines to cheese to produce to seafood to jamon to eggs to cafe con leche to spices, this place had it all!

Open everyday with the exception of Monday (I think!), the market was a great place to grab a quick bite to eat or to plan the next meal at the flat.

You will find mercados like this...just ask!

The antique stands at the end of Las Ramblas, near the statue of Colon is an absolute treasure trove for trivia nuts and collectors. You will find tons of stuff that are guaranteed to tingle your imagination or simply rot in one of your shelves. In any case, when you see something that you really really like try to act indifferent to it so that you can ask for a good price. If you act like that postcard of the Beatles means life and death to you, you can rest assure that the person will jack up the prices for you. Happy hunting!

    Shop like the locals do!

On your walk down La Rambla, make sure you stop in the Mercado La Boqueria. This is a food market, and let me tell you, if it was once alive you can find it here. Aside from all form of animal for sale, there is a huge selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, candy, and even a place to buy beer and wine (and sangria!). The locals come here (I'm guessing once a week) to stock up on necessities, and you will see them walking around with shopping baskets or huge bags. It is a madhouse, a huge crush of people, a rainbow or colors, and so much fun. Oh, and for the Americans out there who can't live without a touch of home, that's a Dunkin' Donuts on the corner (left side of picture).

Antique Shopping Street Near La Rambla

On of the antique shops we saw

After visiting the Cathedral, my wife and I decided to walk back to La Rambla. But instead of getting on Carrer (Street) Portaferrissa dels Boters (a straight shot back) we took Carrer de Banys Nous de la Palla. It turns out this street sort of parallels La Rambla.

We found a number of unique antique shops and fewer tourists on this small side street. It was a very quiet and stately walkway that allowed us to slow our pace down just a bit before we entered back into the frenetic activity of the La Rambla.

Behind the Ramblas, you will find a really nice market. A lot of tourists don´t know this spot, but it is fun to be here and buy some fruit, fish or whatever. You are walking between the inhabitants of Barca, far away from the beaten path....
