Bilbao Berria: Bilbao Berria - drinks or tapas near the Cathedral
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Bilbao Berria is a bar/café/restaurant located on Placa Nova, just across the square from the Cathedral. It has a shaded terrace area on the square, bar and eating area on the ground floor, and a further eating area downstairs. We first noticed it when we visited the Cathedral, and popped in here for a quick coffee. Whilst drinking the coffee, we stood at the bar admiring all of the tasty tapas treats on display.

A few days later, Alison & I needed somewhere for lunch in the area, so returned to try some of the tapas for ourselves. We chose to sit in the non-smoking section downstairs. The place was busy with groups of office workers enjoying their lunch. There were plates of delicious looking little tapas all lined up - you just picked out what ever you liked the look of. Each individual item had a wooden skewer sticking out of it, and at the end of your meal the waiter counted up all of the skewers and charged you accordingly. Most of them were little savoury taste sensations - and there was some little desserts as well if you could fit them in. Most enjoyable, and only around 10 euro each, including a beer.

Cacao Sampaka: Cacao Sampaka - amazing hot chocolate
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • If you like hot chocolate then you won't be disappointed with a visit to Cacao Sampaka! This place is a chocoholics heaven - the front of the shop is filled with amazing looking chocolate to buy, and then at the rear there is a small café where you can taste. There are currently two branches of Cacao Sampaka in Barcelona, and more branches in other parts of Spain. We visited the one on Carrer del Consell de Cent, just off Rambla de Catalunya.

We headed straight to the café section at the rear of the store. Whilst I just sampled a couple of their chocolates, Alison had a small sandwich and an incredibly evil looking hot chocolate. She was very satisfied! After our snack I was very well behaved and didn't even make any purchases in the shop ; )

Café Bar Ouiso: Café Bar Ouiso - on Placa de George Orwell
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • If you are roaming around the Barri Gotic district and want somewhere interesting to stop off for a drink/coffee/snack then why not try Ouiso. This is a brightly decorated bar located on Placa de George Orwell. If the weather is mild you can take a seat in the square and relax for a while with a drink, or head inside, as we did, to the colourful interior. The walls are covered in murals adding a really good vibe to the place.

We stopped by late one morning and just had a coffee. If we had of had more time in Barcelona we would have returned for a drink one evening as I am sure it is a fun place to socialise. It also looked like a great place for lunch on a sunny day in the square.

El Reloj: El Reloj - Drinks or a Meal on Via Laietana
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • A helpful VT friend of mine recommended El Reloj as a great place to go and enjoy a relaxing meal. On our 2nd visit to Barcelona we flew in around dinner time, and decided to head somewhere that had come recommended for our first meal back in Spain. El Reloj is located on the busy Via Laietana, not too far from the Cathedral (though across the other side of the road). There is a bar section at the front and a brightly lit dining area at the back. A large TV screen was showing some local programs, but the volume was turned down - I hear that it is quite a lively place to go when a sporting match is being televised.

The restaurant area was about half full, with a mixture of locals and tourists. We ordered a very tasty bottle of Rioja, and a selection of tapas dishes, including: - Croquetas Caseras - Patatas Bravas - Jamon Iberico (ham) - Queso Semi (cheese) - Bread rubbed with tomato - Calamares a la Romana Service was really friendly and we enjoyed our meal, though it is not the place to go for a romantic meal if that is what you are after. The bill came to 44 euro, with half of that being for the wine (Jan 2007)

The Spanish do good meat, and when I read about the Aragonese cuisine on offer at El Rincon de Aragon it sounded worth a try. This small and very friendly restaurant is located only a minute or two walk off La Rambla, in the El Raval district. Don't be put off by the unassuming front of the restaurant as the action happens at the rear. There is a beautiful tile-backed bar area as you enter - walk past this to the seating area at the back. We were a little dubious at first as the only table of people there were other tourists....but within an hour the restaurant had filled up locals, all who seemed to be on a first name basis with the staff. Speaking of the staff, they were a delight! Our lovely waitress made us laugh with her facial expressions and kept the food and drinks coming with a smile every time.

We ate and drank way too much. We started with a salad and some bread to share, the bread was particularly delicious - Spanish style rubbed with tomatoes. Main courses - Alison & Alex ordered the Roast Lamb and I ordered the Suckling Pig. Both were seriously good, with moist meat and crunchy skin. Very rich flavours though, but a bottle of Antano Crianza 2001 helped wash it down nicely. The three of us were having such a great evening that we ordered another bottle of wine and sat and gossiped for a while after our meal.

Escriba: Escriba - Historic cafe & cake shop
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Escriba is a pastry shop and café located on La Rambla. It is situated in a stunning modernista building, which dates back to 1820. There is a display cabinet at the front of the shop filled with very decadent looking cakes and pastries. At the rear there is a small café area where you can relax with a coffee and cake or a light lunch. We visited Escriba twice for breakfast. Before you find a table, have a browse at all of the tasty pastries and such on offer and then order from the downstairs counter in the café (or they may come and take your order depending on how busy they are).

On both occasions we had a coffee which was good, and shared an array of pastries....not the healthiest of breakfast, but hey - we were on holidays! Alison particularly enjoyed the berry tart that she ate on our second visit, and I was pretty impressed with Escriba's version of the good old chocolate croissant ; )

Forn de Sant Jaume Cafe: Forn de Sant Jaume Cafe - cafe & bakery
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • One morning, before a visit to Casa Batllo, we were walking through L'Eixample looking for somewhere low-fuss to have a quick breakfast. We were attracted to a cake shop called Forn de Sant Jaume, but were disappointed to see that there was nowhere inside to have a coffee....as we walked away we realised that there was a café right next door, actually connected to the shop - perfect! Forn de Sant Jaume café is very small. There are several stools along the counter where you can sit, or a few small booths along the opposite wall. It was quite busy when we were there, with office workers popping in for a quick espresso and pastry on their way to work.

We took a seat at the bar and ordered from the nice young lady who seemed to be running the café by herself. Alison had an orange juice and a small roll, and I had a coffee and a croissant. It was nothing amazing, but hit the spot, and was nice and quick which enabled us to get on with our days adventures.

Golfo de Bizkaia: Golfo de Bizkaia - great bar/tapas in El Born
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • If you are looking for a casual place for some drinks and food in the La Ribera district then head to Golfo de Bizkaia, which is a small bar that serves delicious tapas. We stopped in there one day for lunch, attracted by the small crowd of people milling around the bar. This buzzy bar has room for standing by the bar and a small seating area to the side. We started with a icy cold beer while we watched the locals eating, to get an idea of how it all worked.

The bar was covered in plates of tempting tapas, all on small pieces of baguette. All we had to do was to get a plate and select as many little tapas as we liked, going back again and again to the bar if we wanted to. There was also some special dishes that could be ordered from the barman. Each individual item had a wooden skewer sticking out of it, and at the end of our meal the barman counted up all of the skewers we had and charged us accordingly. All the items we tried were delicious, and we really enjoyed our lunch at Golfo de Bizkaia. The bill came to 25 euro (for 3 of us) including a couple of beers each - bargain! (Jan 2007)

Hisop: Hisop - Contemporary Catalan cuisine
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Hisop is a stylish restaurant serving up 'contemporary Catalan cuisine' in designer surroundings. I had read some great reviews of it prior to our latest visit to Barcelona, and decided it was the perfect venue for our a special dinner. I booked a table (via email) a few weeks before our trip as we wanted to dine on a Saturday night. The restaurant is located on a narrow lane, just off Avenue Diagonal. We were the first diners in that evening - our 9pm booking was still considered early by the locals. However, the small restaurant filled up over the next hour or so. Service was great - professional but friendly, and they really made an effort to explain the dishes to us. The evening started with a refreshing glass of Cava (Spanish sparkling wine), which was followed by two really great bottles of wine - a 1999 Marques de Vargas Rioja and a 2005 Marques de Riscal Sauvignon Blanc - the white wine was particularly good, and both were reasonably priced.

We all opted for the Degustation (tasting) menu, and sat back to wait for each small course to be delivered. Here is what we ate: - Seawater foam with cockles (this had a real 'sea' taste to it and Alex & Alison didn't like it at all!) - Black pudding topped with cod, and mushroom soup - Foie Gras with muscadet grape tarte tatin, and caramel & balsamic ice cream (the best foie gras Alex has ever had) - Hake with poached egg & caviar, on artichoke gel & soup, with squid ink spaghetti - Veal cheek with turnip puree, with mushroom ravioli and jus, and micro-cress - Seven different cheeses served with quince paste (we shared one serve of cheese) - Mint infusion with lime sorbet - Crema Catalan, espresso ice cream, caramelised wild-mushroom sauce It was quite a meal! Some of it was very good, some not so great, but all up it was a fabulous experience.

Nou Candanchu: Nou Candanchu - food or drinks in Gracia
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • One day whilst exploring in the Gracia district we were in need of some lunch, so we headed to the pretty Placa Ruis I Taulet and checked out our options. The colourful sign at Nou Candanchu caught our eye and we decided to give it a try. It wasn't quite warm enough to sit out at one of their tables in the square, and as the restaurant area was full, we decided to take a seat up at the bar and have some tapas. We all ordered a beer, and sipped on it whilst deciding what to eat from the tasty array of food displayed on the counter. Service wasn't the greatest, but we were quite content, and could see that the staff were being kept very busy with the hectic lunchtime crowd.

We pointed out several dishes from the tapas style options that caught our eye, including spinach frittata, patatas bravas, chicken wings, octopus, and very garlicky mushrooms (I didn't eat them as I am not a fan). The food was good, and the cold beer accompanied our meal perfectly. We found sitting at the bar to be a great way to feel apart of the local culture. The bill came to 22.50 euro (Jan 2007).
