Margarita Blue, 'El Sótano': The food is WELL worth the wait!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • A hip place, full of positive energy...a DJ spins house music in the dining area. Locals and tourists as well converge upon this bar/restaraunt...it was packed! We waited over two hours to eat here but it was worth the wait. Don't hesitate to order a margarita or two or three or four (Blue and frozen or the conventional) while you wait, they're yummy. NOTE: Be SURE to check in with the host/hostess to make sure you're moving up the list to be seated.

The ropa vieja and the chicken enchiladas were my favorites but all the food ordered was incredibly delicious. A group of us ate there and we ordered two items per person, sharing them tapas style. Don't forget to order dessert, it shouldn't be missed.

Restaurante Puda Can Manel.: Nice place in the Port Vell
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is a nice place and very well located in the Port Vell, next to the beach and promenade of Barceloneta.Along the promenade you'll find many restaurants but normally they are very expensive.

This one has a reasonable price and also has a menu of the day for 8,50 Euros,if you ask a la carte you'll pay a little bit more.

    We choosed:
    Monkfish Soup.
    Octupus Salad.
Chicken and Rabbit in garlic sauce.
    A house Salad.
    Desserts.

Textil Cafe: A trendy terrace into a medieval palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The terrace is the entrance patio from a middle-age building, Palace of Marquises de Llio, from XIII Century. Two interesting museums are located in this building (Textil and Pre-Columbine Art). Of course, you can eat inside, but it's not so special.

You can eat reasonably well, all Mediterranean specialties, but be aware that portions tend to be too small. IMO it's a better place for having breakfast, or just a rest, sipping a good cafe or tea (my favourite is 'te a la menta', Moroccan-style tea with fresh mint).

As a summary: one of the nicest places in the area (that it is as well one of the nicest areas of Barcelona). The shop of the Textil Museum is quite interesting as well, you can find good souvenirs.

Plus: From March to December: Sunday evenings live Jazz sessions (5 euros entrance)

Eating in Barcelona is a bit expensive so if you want to economize at the same time you're eating whenever you want, that's your place. We were completly satisfaced both with the service and the food. In addition they are open all the day and we could eat at 4 o'clock in the afternoon!
The only problem could be that the main dining hall is underground and you must go upstairs to search for more food.

I liked the different kind of meat and the paella.

Me gustaron los diferentes tipos de carme y la paella.

"La Fonda" is a nice restaurant in the center of Barcelona (Barri Gothic). I read here on vt about this restaurant and the comments were very good, so we decided to have a dinner there

Pans and Company: A better fast food choice.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Pans & Company would probably be my first choice for fast food in Barcelona. Simply because they offer local specialities and not American things like Hamburgers and the like. They basically offer (along with a dessert bar and coffee station) various types of Bocadillos (long thin sandwiches) with different things in them. I recommend this place if you're pressed for time or want something light.

    Bocadillo Tandem.

The Babilonia belongs to a chain of three restaurants apparently, but I will only discuss the one nearest the Sagrada Familia. We chose this place for two reasons, it's proximity to the famed temple and the view of the temple when dining in their outdoor/street section. Service was very friendly and the food we had was excellent! We really enjoyed this restaurant possibly because it was our last night in Barcelona.

    All the following were stupendous!

    Hummus
    Falafel
    Greek Salad
    Rack of Lamb
    T-bone

We were with my mother-in-law, hence all the food. But it was all excellent and the beer wasn't bad either!

    Mercat Boqueria: LA BOQUERIA
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • La Boqueria, or Mercat St Joseph to give it its proper name, is a large food market situated right off Las Ramblas. This is where the local chefs apparently buy their ingredients so it if its good enough for them I guess its good enough for the rest of us. It is quite touristy given its location but its still a good place to come to get your fresh food for picnics and whatever. As well as the stalls there a couple of tapas bars within the market where you can sit and eat/drink.

I came here primarily at breakfast time since breakfast wasn't included where I was staying. There are loads of fruit stalls and many of them sell small [well varying sizes] tubs of mixed fruit salad & individual fruits ready to eat and with a fork - perfect for breakfast on the go! They were very popular as were the fresh fruit drinks that those stalls also sold. I tried a few and can recommend the mango and also the orange and papaya - YUM! :)

Can Miralletes: Feeling the countryside… in the middle of the city
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • When you arrive to the place, the first though is: what does a “masia” (traditional peasant’s house) in the middle of Barcelona, close to Sagrada Familia and Hospital de Sant Pau? The building was there for centuries (it’s said to be at least 250 years old), before the city swallowed the surrounding countryside. Just a bit of land was left around the house, now a public square. The beautiful old structure of the building in full city makes it extraordinarily welcoming.

The site specialties are traditional Catalan dishes, but somewhat different and nicely elaborated. There seems to be a very good deal with “menu del dia” at lunchtime: 12 €. It could be a very good option for those of you visiting the area, far enough from tourist traps around Sagrada Familia. There is also a “gourmet menu”, for 35 € (available at dinnertime as well), and of course you can made your own set of choices (“a la carta”).

Once I was there celebrating a friend's birthday and we had a great time. Later (Dec 2006) I returned on Saturday ("menu del dia" option works only on workdays). Be aware that they charge 2 euros for every not-so-big loaf of bread!! It was a very good lunch indeed, even a bit expensive, and the service was quite slow.
