Espai Sucre is a must for any dessert lovers visiting Barcelona. Very few dessert restaurants exist so to have this opportunity is something special. Being a pastry chef myself I was told by co-workers when they knew I was going to Barcelona to go to Espai Sucre.
The desserts are very modern and involve some unusual ingredients and combinations. We started with a dish each from the savoury menu that offers 6 choices to get you started if you haven't had dinner yet. I had the suckling pig with mustard ice cream and smoked aubergines and Clinton had the magret of duck with sponge cake of cacao and lemon. Both were delicious.
Then we wen't all the way and had the 5 course dessert degustation. It was very exciting to have only desserts come out on a degustation, usually during a degustation I am just hanging out for the end when typically 2 desserts will come out. Every dish looked great and had some ingredients I had never tasted before which always makes for a better dining experience.
The dish we liked the least was Clintons last course called "Empyreumatic". It had a beer foam on top which took over the other flavours.
My favourite dish was my last course simply called truffle, butter and hazelnut. It is a dish supplement that you can swap for the last course and I would not eat there without doing so. The textures and flavour combination of chocolate, truffle and hazelnut was amazing.
The bread was also very good, especially the buttermilk. It was like a croissant but denser.
They also have a 3 course dessert menu and tasting menu which involves 2 savoury and 3 sweet dishes.
The restaruant is quite small but has a very comfortable atmosphere and a nice modern decor. The staff are helpfull and enthusiastic wanting to know how you enjoyed each course. They offer menus in English, although not quite as descriptive as in Spanish.
The price we thought was reasonable for such a different experience. Our mains were 12.50€ and 13.60€, the degustation was 36.00€.
A highly recommended dining experience.
It's labelled as a "dessert" restaurant, and we were advised as such upon entering. However not all dishes are sweet so do come VERY hungry and get the Tasting Menu, with the wine pairings. They will not disappoint. Unfortunately I am unable to remember everything we had to the letter, partially due to our lack of understanding of Catalan and Spanish. Although everyone working there spoke beautiful English. Every course was spectacular, if not only for the presentation. We started with a shortbread that had a parmesan flavor, followed by a green foam shot (yum!). The last "starter" was a very thin cracker with a layer of cream, perhaps mascarpone cheese and other ingredients, topped with corn and black pepper sugar flakes. The main course was eel and veal which they referred to as surf and turf-beautiful and tasty. Did I mention that you can have pretty much all of the wine you want? There were three more courses, one with a quince gelatin, another with a sort of ginger ale foam, and one with the dense bread and truffle that is listed in other reviews here. The petit fours at the end of the meal were delicious and fun. They provide a list of the petit fours in Catalan, Spanish, and English. The wines were matched excellently. We were told to give them our e-mail address to get the names and items in each course however it's been two weeks and we haven't gotten them yet. In all, the service was flawless and the food superb and FUN. The decor and music were delightful and simple. Romantic, but could also be fun for the kids. Be sure to make reservations. We did not, but went on a Tuesday as they opened the doors so they were able to accomodate us. They are closed on Mondays.
Favorite Dish:
All were so good but the Petit Fours were so much fun to read about and eat, let's go with that!
Have only read reviews but felt it worthy to mention: Espai Sucre
Favorite Dish:
Savory entrees and desserts: octopus with beet and tomato sorbet; salad of squid and garbanzos or lentils with foie gras; soup of lichee, celery, apple and eucalyptus; coffe sorbet and carmelized bananas.
This small restaurant, that was featured in the NY Times, serves only desserts. You can choose between a 3- and 5-course meal. Regarless of your choice, you will get a little surprise dish from the chef with your pre-dinner drinks and some delicious petit fours afterwards.
The desserts surprise with daring flavor and texture combinations. Some of the dessers are finished while you watch from your seat and are always accompanied by a explanation in Spanish or Catalan by the waiter/waitress. (picture from www.apicius.es)
This is a very sophisticated and elegant place, with amazing food options, such as the varying tasting multiple course menu (which is delicious by the way). This place is Jordi Butróns and it is a combination of many raw materials that is in a sense like eating tapas in an elegant fashion. Here is a very good article I found about the restaurant that gives a good description of the place:

Favorite Dish:
Go for both of the tasting menus! It will be worth it!
Espai Sucre is both a school and restaurant. In the evening, there are usually two sittings--8:30pm and 11pm. You order a 3- or 5-course meal, with or without wine pairings. I was expecting dessert--something sweet, unfilling, and that I'll need to eat a real dinner afterwards. By the time we were done though, we felt as if we had a real dinner.
The host was so nice and friendly, totally not expected in such a hip restaurant. If you attempt Spanish, people are generally nicer.
Favorite Dish:
It's so hard to describe the food here because they're unlike anything I've ever tasted. Expect unexpected combinations of flavors, foams, shavings, extracts, powders, and unique textures.
