Food stall in La Mercat Boqueira: A foodie's delight right in the market!

The wild mushroom mix!

On the leftmost side of the market as you enter is a food stall where fish, seafood, meat, and some vegetable dishes can be cooked in minutes in front of your eyes. This reminds me very much of street food stalls in Asia where only fresh ingredients are used, and several pans and pots are gurgling or fying away, and the smell of all this cooking makes you heady with hunger, it's impossible not to salivate and eventually you see yourself plopped in front of the stall, that is, if you can find a vacant seat or stool.

I don't remember the name of the place, but we were drawn in that direction as we were making our way around the market, mainly because of the irresistible smell of cooking, but also because we saw the place packed full, and with groups of people milling nearby waiting for places. These were of course signs that we had just bumped into an excellent local eating joint! So off we joined the milling groups.

The stall is really just the usual stall, nothing fancy, but it is clean, with stools around the counters on three sides, where you're faced with glass cases where they keep the fish, seafood, meat and vegetables, and other ingredients. From this array, the customer chooses and indicates how it is preferred to be done. Of course there is a list of dishes written on a small blackboard behind from which he or she can choose as well. There are a few small tables on the side, but since this place is always full, be prepared to wait. The waiting time is almost always longer than your actual eating time. Waiters take the orders even before you are seated, so you don't have to wait to be seated before ordering. In any case, the cooking is done practically Asian style -- in a pan that's always heated and ready, so food is done in no time.

As for price, it was more expensive than I expected, considering that it's not a "proper" restaurant. For a plate of shells, a mixed mushroom sauté, and a few pieces of a certain type of shell, and a can of coke, and small beer, we paid close to 50 euros.

This is a place you go to not for the ambience, for the effect, to relax, and for when you plan a romantic dinner. This is a place where you go to for the food -- good food.

Favorite Dish: What was special about this place is that they used very fresh ingredients, as one can see. The seafood was great -- done simply, in butter and garlic and herbs. I love the wild mushroom mix sauté -- with olive oil and garlic -- just perfect!

Pinotxo Bar - Famous in la Boqueria: Pinotxo Bar

Located in la Boqueria, Barcelona’s most famous market, Pinotxo (Catalan for Pinocchio) is just one of numerous stalls serving tapas. It is, however, considered one of the best ones at la Boqueria, which has earned it recognition and fame. Go there in the morning and have breakfast with cava. Let the animated chef choose the dishes for you… or if you feel like having the delicious octopus with lentils for breakfast, just order it!

Mercat Boqueria: LA BOQUERIA

La Boqueria, or Mercat St Joseph to give it its proper name, is a large food market situated right off Las Ramblas. This is where the local chefs apparently buy their ingredients so it if its good enough for them I guess its good enough for the rest of us. It is quite touristy given its location but its still a good place to come to get your fresh food for picnics and whatever. As well as the stalls there a couple of tapas bars within the market where you can sit and eat/drink.

Favorite Dish: I came here primarily at breakfast time since breakfast wasn't included where I was staying. There are loads of fruit stalls and many of them sell small [well varying sizes] tubs of mixed fruit salad & individual fruits ready to eat and with a fork - perfect for breakfast on the go! They were very popular as were the fresh fruit drinks that those stalls also sold. I tried a few and can recommend the mango and also the orange and papaya - YUM! :)

On my last day in Barcelona I went again to "La Boqueria", this time to have a quick breakfast. We?ve been to Bar Boqueria and had some cortados and shared a bocadillo de lomo and a bocadillo de pollo. Obviously you can get much more and more special dishes on the market place such as fish plates or traditional spanish cuisine or as well all kind of fresh fruit drinks.

At El Quim...

It's a great tapas bar in the middle of Boqueria Market. The food is fresh, tastes great, you don't wait too long (unless there are other people all around the bar waiting for their turn) and the surrounding is quite unique too.
Almejas or calamares are well worth trying!

It's a very famous place in Barcelona to eat tipical sandwiches (or bocadillos) is "la boquería", a small place full of people trying to get one of theese sandwichs and drink special wine.... If you have Claustrophobia, don't enter... wait outside..hehehe.

And the other place (la oveja negra) is the best to drink the most famous and delicious Sangría.... the ambient is quite spanish, funny and relaxing.... there's no place to dance, only tables to drink with your friends and talk a lot...

All sorts of interesting delicacies in the market.

Various meats, seafood, cheese, and produce at extremely low prices. A great place to buy some cheese, baguettes and berries on your way to the beach. The one near the train station has a couple of great tapas bars.

Favorite Dish: A huge carton of strawberries cost a single euro while I was there.

There are plenty of restaurants with local food or fast food. But I prefer going to one of the covered markets, i.e. Mercat de Sant Antoni or Mercat Boqueria (Rambla street). There you can eat really authentic local dishes (fresh fish, meat, vegetables) at the lowest possible prices.

Favorite Dish: various shell fish dishes, and of course - black paella
