The cable car at Montjuic was a nice ride to get to the top to see the castle ... the ride take about 10 minutes and you wait no longer than a couple of minutes for a cable car .... the cost was 9.50 Euro round-trip. Otherwise it's about an hour walk to get to the castle.
The cable car to Montjuic (or Telerifico de Montjuic) provides the best views over the whole city of Barcelona.
You can catch it down by the beach and get a return to Montjuic for €12.50 adult return. There are a few things worth seeing in Montjuic or you can stop off for a bite to eat before returning but even if you go just for the journey, it's a worthwhile trip.
Barceloneta is a lovely area to stroll round. From the seaside to the quayside and round to Port Vell, the rejuvenated port area, it is well worth a visit. For the best views take the aerial tramway from Barceloneta to Miramar, but be warned, it's not for the faint hearted. The views are excellent though if you can stand the heights.
Of course there are several means for transportation that you can use to climb the Montjuic.
By Metro, tram L2 or L3 and on foot (which I love doing) but......
There is also this TELEFèRIC that will carry you high over Barcelona through the sky to the Montjuic.
The PANORAMA of city and harbour are EXTRAORDINARY.........
Take the cable car up to the top of Montjuic. The castle which sits atop the hill has been around since the mid sevententh century has served as a miltary base as well as a prison after the civil war. It is currently the Museu Militar - the Miltary Museum.
The funicular and cable car ride to the top of Montjuic is a great way to see the whole city. The view from the top is spectacular. Then walk down the mountain to the Parliament building and see the fountain.
the trip to the top of Mount Juic is well worth the effort, not a lot of effort if on a coach tour or have taken the cable car from the harbour area. The view is worthwhile though. Clear panoramic views over the city, spread out below and crawling over the hills in the distance.
Take the cable cars up Montjuic and go to the military museum at the top. This place offers the best views over all of the city. The military architecture and exhibits are interesting too and fun for all ages.
I don't like heights and from that perspective I would warn anyone with issues similar to my own that this will be a trying experience. You pick up the cable car in Barcelonetta, Port Vell or Mont Juic by going up rather ancient looking iron towers that didn't inspire me with great confidence... I am reluctantly forced to conclude that this is the best view of the city you can get.
By the way the tower in Barcelonetta also houses a fashionable restaurant with great views!
This was the view from the cable car overlooking the harbour area.
It cost 7.50 Euros each for a single trip,it was good value for money.
A very nice link between the port and Mont Juic. When the sky is clear (would it ever be not clear over there??) you have a marvelous view over the city and the coastline.
