I know much better the area South of Barcelona. The landscapes may be not so spectacular as in La Costa Brava, but if your aim is a good beach, some sightseeing, and good food, you'll find there plenty as well. Sitges has an interesting old town, nice shops, and very good beaches (that tend to be too crowded indeed), and it's a popular place for gay people (just in case this mean anything to you, it's a very popular place for families and honeymooners as well). Check this link for more info: sitgestour.com Vilanova i la Geltrú may be not so charming and well-known as Sitges. However, there is a beautiful promenade and an interesting small medieval quarter. The main beach is excellent, and the prices of lodging and food are more reasonable. So, you can visit both in a daytrip or better a weekend trip, there are trains from Barcelona each 20 minutes departing from Passeig de Gracia or Sants. Is 30 minutes to Sitges and 40 to Vilanova. You may have a look here: vilanovageltru.com, here: vilanovaturisme.net or at my (still to be completed) Vilanova VT page I cannot recommend you any specific place to stay, as my mother lives in an apartment on the beach in Vilanova i la Geltrú. So, never used accommodation on this area ;-) Leave a Comment

You can reach easily by train the towns of the Costa del Maresme/Costa Brava closer to Barcelona (Blanes, Lloret de Mar, Santa Susanna...) but these are the most overdeveloped areas. To find more charm and local flavor, you should head more North, as Tossa de Mar, Cadaques, L'Escala... these are most difficult to reach, there are buses (check Sarfa, but I cannot comment as I've always went by car). A few times I spent long weekends in the Costa Brava (Tossa de Mar, Lloret de Mar) but out of season and taking advantage of the ultra-cheap offers you can get there in November-December (4* hotels at less than half the normal price). Obviously our aim was not beaching, but exploring the monuments and nature trails of the area) Leave a Comment

Visit the vineyards of codorniu. The history of codorniu began in 1551. It is the saga of 17 generations of a family that have lived an authentic pasion for the land. Enjoy the tour and finish it with a glas of the famous cava. Open mo-fri 9-17 sat and sun 9 - 13 Leave a Comment

Tossa De Mar is a 1.5 hour bus ride from Barcelona and is well worth the trip. Located on Costa Brava, this beach resort town is a respite from all the walking you have done in Barcelona the last few days. From the bus stop walk about half a mile past narrow streets lined with shops and restaurants galore and you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the Mediterranean Sea and to your right, on a hill, the remnants of a 12th century fortress built to protect a town of 80 houses and its church from invading pirates. The beach allows topless sunbathing (as most European resorts do). There are also glass-bottom boat excursions, banana boat rides and snorkeling along the rocky shoreline. Try and bring a beach umbrella, as there are no rental provisions. I bought one for 16 euros and packed it to bring back home. You can also buy masks and snorkels for about 9 euros for the set, which is less than a rental in the U.S. For a laid back lunch try Wimpy's right across the street from the beach. Great paella and huge mugs of beer. Lots of restaurants to choose from. Watch your back while walking the narrow streets as scooters and cars are allowed! But definitely worth the air-conditioned bus trip. Take dramamine for the bus for those inclined to motion sickness as the last 10 minutes of the trip are down a mountainside with twists and turns. Or just close your eyes and enjoy the ride! Leave a Comment Address: Costa Brava, northeast of BarcelonaDirections: Pick up autobus from Estacio del Nord, just east of the Arc de Trompf. Ask any taxi driver which bus to take to Tossa. Buses run every half hour or so: I took the 10:18 a.m. there and the 5:40 to return. Plenty of time to see the Mediterranean.

DO NOT MISS a day trip in SITGES, not far from Barcelona: architecture, lovely seaside resort already enjoyable in April, shops... This town lives in the spirit of CATALUNYA (education is bilingual: Catalan/Spanish.) romantic atmosphere as well, with "el pati blau" Address: barcelona tourist information

There are a lot of bodega tours available in the countryside surrounding Barcelona, but without a car it's not easy to get out to the Penedes region etc, and if you have a car you can't sample the wines once you get there! My favourite wine-based day out in the region is to Sant Sadurni d'Anoia, a town which is the heart of Cava production (90% of it is made in the region). The town itself is easily accessed from Barcelona by train. It is a quiet place but very pleasant, with some good places to eat and drink and a tourist information centre which will put you on the right track to enjoy some cava tours, from the big suppliers to the very small. But for me the highlight is the Freixnet bodega, which is conveniently situated near the train station. It's not my absolute favourite tour (the Tio Pepe sherry tour in Jerez wins that prize!) but is a really good experience and definitely worth a visit. If you have access to transportation, drive the 30 miles to Sitges. I found the resort town charming. Of course, we went during the off season and most places were closed but we still enjoyed it after the hussle and bussle of Barcelona. Just a note for those who care ... since I saw very few people while there, I didn't know until later that it's known for being gay-friendly. Leave a Comment Address: 35 KM south of Barcelona

A real "catalan" town with a famous market that takes place on the main square. It's only about an hour and a half with the cercanias trains from Placa Catalunya! Really pretty old town to wander around in!!! Leave a Comment

ARAGON PYRENEES - JACA AREA You really should try to see both (H)echo and Anso even though the transport from and to Jaca is very limited without a car - but it can be done with a night in Echo and 2 in Anso. A car would be a definite advantage here but I found the valley above Anso towards the French border very good for hitching as well as being quite spectacular. If you do not go much on mountains and their periphery, give it a miss. If you do you will be spellbound as long as you can get up beyond where the bus goes. ARAGON PYRENEES - TORLA Get the bus up to Ordesa. It runs frequently from the bus stop below the town and is quite cheap. there is a park centre on the way up and you can get off and see it and then get a later bus on up for no extra cost. Terrific choice of walks from very simple - up the valley or back to Torla to major climbing (with quite a lot in between) Leave a Comment Address: http://www.ordesa.net/ is very informative.Other Contact: http://www.ordesa.net/como-llega
