Las Arenas is the second city's bullring (after the "Monumental", the current one), it was inaugurated in 1900 and it saw its last bullfight in 1977. It has been slowly wasting away ever since and both neighbours and Barcelona's City Council have long been anxious to clean up Las Arenas, and soon it will get a new life. In early 2003 the architect Richard Rogers began work on a new commercial and leisure centre on the site. The new building will conserve the outer shell of the bullring but will transform the inside into a modern space shared by stores, restaurants, a cinema, exercise facilities, a health spa, meeting spaces and offices. Located next to the Plaça d'Espanya is a building known as Las Arenas (the arenas). This disused bullring was opened in 1900 with a capacity for 15,000 spectators. Where bulls and matadors once faced-off, weeds now push through the ground. However, there was much construction about this structure which may mean a restoration of the building or development into something else (no doubt some sort of commercial center). On the eastern side of Plaça d'Espanya you can see the Arenas de Barcelona. This bullfight arena was constructed in 1899 by Font i Carreras. It is a beautiful building but it is not very much used, since bullfighting never was really popular in Catalynya. Leave a Comment Address: Plaça d'EspanyaDirections: Take the metro to Espanya

Originally, this was a bullfighting ring and still hosts bullfights sometimes. However it hosts a Bullfighting Museum today displaying all objects related to bullfighting. Directions: Placa d'Espanya

We passed by Las Arenas and I thought I'd take a snap. It looks cool from the outside. Didn't venture in, the only blood sports I go for are at Anfield and Elland Road. It's hasn't been used since 1990 as a bullring and I think plans are being drawn up to turn it into some sort of leisure park. They are going to keep the design of the exterior intact.
