Inside the Concepió by seamandrew The Concepió was actually one of our favorite sites. We fell in love with the beautiful courtyard in this building. Unfortunately, my guidebook says nothing about it, but it is located in area with many mondernist buildings. I would suggest spending an hour or two, walking along the streets in this part of the Eixample. Start at the corner of Passeig de Gràcia and Carrer d'Aragó. Walk east-ward towards the Sagrada Familia just about 3 blocks and you'll find the Concepió on the corner of and Carrer d'Aragó and Carrer de Roger Llúria. Also nearby (all north or east of the Concepió) are the Mercat de la Concepió (only one east) ,Casa Elizade with it's beautiful inner patio, Palau Montaner, Palau Casades and the Casa Thomas. The last four are on Carrer de Roger Llúria and intersect with Carrer de València (only Elizade), and Mallorca respectively. If you're a fan of moderniste architecture then you must devote some time to this area. Leave a Comment Directions: The Eixample, all within the triangle created by Avinguda Diagonal, Passeig de Gràcia and Carrer 'Aragó. La Pedrera is also in this triangle.

Casa Terrades, most known as "Casa de les Puntxes" (house of the spikes) was designed by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafach in1905. Itt has a somewhat medieval appearance, and shows how the architect was influenced by Nordic style. The façade was made in brick, and the ornaments around the windows and doors in stone. The big panels at the roof level were made in ceramics, with a sun clock and decorated with many other symbolic elements of Catalan nationalism. For instance, an image of de Sant Jordi (Saint George, patron of Catalonia) with the inscription in Catalan "Saint Patron of Catalonia please restore our freedom" Other great artists collaborated to make this building: Alfons Juyol (stone sculptures), Eudald Amigo (stained glass windows), Manuel Ballarin (forged iron works). Nowadays is a private owned building and visits are not allowed, but do not miss its magnificent exterior when walking around the area. Hospital de Santa Creu i SAnt Pau, Barcelona by mmurie So, your first time in Barcelona, and you might be asking yourself,... "ok let's visit some Modernisme works, where do I start with?" That's when maybe, I can help you. The easiest way to visit them: (from Plaza Catalunya) Take line 2 from Pg de Gracia (at Gran Via Avenue) to Sagrada Familia. After visiting the church, take the chance to visit Sant Pau Hospital by Domenech i Montaner, it is just a few minutes away from Sagrada Familia. Once you're finished, take the busline 74 at the station Av Mare de Deu de Montserrat-Genova and after 6 stops you must get off at Mare de Deu de la Salut-Hospital de l'Esperanca. To discover Casa Batllo and la Pedrera while you have a little walk up Pg de Gracia take the line 32 of bus at the station Mare de Deu de la Salut-Hospital de l'Esperansa and after 3 stops you must get off at Pl Lesseps-Riera de Vallcarca. Take the line L3 of underground at the station LESSEPS ( Placa Lesseps) and after 2 stops you must get off at DIAGONAL ( Rambla Catalunya). If you go straight you'll return to the departure point. Have a nice walk!! Leave a Comment

Palau Justícia by seamandrew I'm afraid there's not much I can offer as to the history or purpose of this building. I felt it was worth mentioning because of it's beautiful architecture. It is located on the eastern side of the Mercat de Santa Caterina and Arc de Triomf. It's name translates to the Palace of Justice so perhaps that gives some idea of what the purpose of this palace was. It was also closed so we couldn't get more information. Leave a Comment Directions: Along the Lluís Companys at the Arc de Triomf.

Casa de les Punxes-L'Eixample by bpwillet Built in 1905, this is one of the nicest buildings of the modern area of Barcelona. The big panels at the roof level were made in decorated ceramics, showing a sun clock and other national Catalan elements. Leave a Comment Address: Avenida Diagonal, 416 - 420

Floating blue giant. by maartenw The new Forum Barcelona is apparantly completed but not yet open to the public (Febr.26, 2005). It is a stunning triangular blue giant, designed by the Swiss architects Herzog & De Meuron. It seems to float without any supporting structure. Both the shiny ceilings and the blue 'cauliflower'' concrete facade are innovative material applications. Leave a Comment Directions: Where the Av. Diagonal meets the sea. Metro 'El Maresme Forum'.

Courtyard, medieval mansion-Carrer Montcada by bpwillet These mansions are on either side of Carrer Montcada. Their small courtyards open up to airy sunlit staircases and small cafes. Most of them are taken up by museums or art galleries but are some of the best and finest places to lose yourself in a glass of wine or in local works of art. Leave a Comment Address: Carrer Montcada

Barcelona Head by Jetgirly This is my favorite piece of urban art in Barcelona. It is a 64 foot sculpture by Roy Lichtenstein, built in 1992 for the Olympics. The statue seems very cartoon-like, yet I didn't think it clashed with the more traditional buildings nearby. It is along the water somewhere between Barceloneta and the bottom of the Ramblas. Leave a Comment Address: Near the bottom of the Ramblas?

Casa Comalat window detail-L'Eixample by bpwillet Built by Salvador Valeri in 1911 this is a fine example of Modernist architecture in L'Eixample. It is used now as office space for lawyers and I am unaware of any interior tours. The exterior appears to be inspired by Gaudi's love of nature. It truly stands out from all the rest of the buildings which surround it. Leave a Comment Address: Av. Diagonal

by arlequin_g This building was built by Salvador Valeri. When you'll see it you'll notice he was very influence by Gaudi. The bottom side reminds me "La Pedrera". The top side represents an arlequin hat. You won't be able to enter but at least you can take some nice photos. You have to visit it cause many tourists don't know it exists and is very close to Passeig de Gracia and Casa Terrades. Leave a Comment Address: Corner Roger de Lluria/CorsegaDirections: When you are at the top of P. de Gracia take Av Diagonal to the right and then the second street to the left
