Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (Palau Nacional) by Blatherwick The Palau Nacional was constructed for the 1929 International Exhibition and is now the major depository of Catalán art. The National Art Museum of Catalonia is one of the most important centers for Romanesque art in the world. More than 100 pieces, including sculptures, icons, and frescoes, are on display. The highlight of the museum is the collection of murals from various Romanesque churches. The frescoes and murals are displayed in apses, much as they were in the churches in which they were found. Each is placed in sequential order, providing the viewer with a tour of Romanesque art from its primitive beginnings to the more advanced, late Romanesque and early Gothic era. In front of the Palau Nacional are the magic fountains. At night there are choreographed water and light shows. However, the place is nice at all times of the day. by rcsparty This building was built in 1929 for the Int'l Exhibition. Since 1934, it has housed the Museum of Catalunyan Art. It includes one of the best collections of Romaneque items, centered around 12th century frescoes. There is a great restaurant for lunch on the 2nd floor, with a beautiful view of the city. Mural painting of Sant Climent de Taull, in MNAC by morganna You could think it is a bit weird a National Museum in Barcelona... but don't. MNAC is a national museum of Catalonia, as they say: the complete history of catalan art. Catalonia has been without nation since a lot of centuries ago, so you can imagine how difficult is to create a museum of this characteristics. I mean there are no monarchy collection under all these rooms, which use to be the main source of big museums. This is also the reason for the importance of MEDIEVAL ART in MNAC, the absolute highlight of the museum, specially the gothic area, which illustrates the high point and the moment of maximum territorial expansion of Catalonia. You will enjoy mural paintings, woodcarvings or enamel work. If you don't like this kind of art, maybe this is not your place. Leave a Comment Phone: +34 93 622 03 76Directions: Monjuïc district.
