by kanjon MACBA, Museu d´Art Contemporani de Barcelona proved as good as it started. At the entrance a big sculpture/mobile by one of the more famous Swedish artists Öyvind Fahlström, served as a beautifully wierd (wierd is good), colourful, welcoming committée. It continued as good, or better, floor after floor of this Richard Meier building, flooding with natural light and good art. Get swept away by, for example, works by Spanish artist Juan Muñoz (1953-2001), see image. Don´t forget the museum-shop! They are always the best for buying gifts no-one knew existed, be it dolls, books or works of art. Leave a Comment Phone: +34.93.412.08.10Directions: Bus 14, 18, 38, 59. by Bendokan Well, I bet many people have described this before but it is really worth a visit and it is one of the cheapest museums you can visit... If you want to see 2 exhibitions you pay 5.50 and for one it's 4 Euro. Don't worry about time to see it all... if you have you ticket you can come back the next day to see the second exhibition you paid for... Really worth a visit. The building is wonderful as well. The MACBA is an ultra-modern modern art museum. Actually, I think it just feels ultra modern because it is like a garish blotch of novelty in the middle of what would otherwise be a beautiful old neighbourhood. It was opened in 1995 and is a work of Meier, a North American architect. The idea of a new museum in a rather depressed, working-class area of the city had long been toyed with by some of the city councilors, and once things started to pick up after the Olympics in terms of tourism, the idea really took off. The MACBA is a truly modern museum – there is no mixing of various stages of 20th century art here, its all contemporary pieces, some of which might not please the uninitiated. The area outside the MACBA is a popular hangout for skateboarders, especially at night, and the surrounding streets have experienced the utmost of gentrification – faux-dive bars that cater to the artsy crowds of locals and tourists, which gradually blend into the solidly immigrant areas of the Raval.
