CaixaForum is an art exhibition centre, belonging to the one of most powerful Catalan saving banks, La Caixa. It's located in a beautiful old factory building, amazing example of Modernist industrial architecture. Most of the abandoned factory wall were respected, and with some artistic interventions of artists like Sol LeWitt and Lucio Fontana, converted it to a spectacular place. The building itself deserve a visit: 3.000 square metres, 3 exhibition halls and 2 polyvalent rooms were concerts and other activities are held. Besides, there is a permanent exhibit of contemporary art, and excellent temporary exhibitions of all kind of artistic expressions. For instance, last time I was there I saw an exhibition of Turner's paintings and another or archaeological Thracian treasures. And more... can you believe all this is for free??? (except special activities) Here you have as well a shop (art books and many unusual items, ideal for gifts), and a pretty good cafe/restaurant ('menu del dia' is a good deal) - - - - - - Tue to Sun: 10:00 to 20:00 (Mon Closed). Special evening activities on Wednesdays of July and August Leave a Comment

Quiet ,please! by Dariana The names comes from the latin Petras albas (white stones). The place was choosen by Queen Elisenda de Montcada to built a monastery of Sisters of the Order of St.Claire ,dedicated to Virgin Mary, by her wish to obtain redemption from her earthly sins . When the king Jaume II died, the queen and women of her family moved into a palace built adjacent to the monastery. According to her wishes, this palace was distroyed after her death. This treasure of Catalan Gothic architecture begun to be built in 1326 and was innagurated an year later. In Middle Age was a custom that one member of noble families choose to become a nun, taking the vows of obedience, chastity, poverty and enclosure. The queen Elisenda was burried here among other noblewomen. In 1931 this monastery was declared a Hitoric-artistic Monument of National Interest. In the ancient dormitory belonging to the nuns and the main hall of the palace is an interesting and valuable collection consisting in paintings and sculptures from Middle Age to European Baroque:Fra Angelico, Tiziano, Tintoretto, Velasquez, Rubens, Guardi and others. All this works of art are contained in the Von Thyssen Bornemisza Collection. The beauty of the three-storey cloisters, the patio with oranges , the silent and the impressive art collection make The Pedralbes Monastery a must see. So, don`t miss it. Entrance to Museu Frederic Marès by seamandrew From the tiny Sant Iu Square one is lead into the lovely courtyard of the Museu Frederic Marès which houses the private sculpture collection of Marès. Donated by the artist himself in 1946, it includes one of the most important displays of Spanish sculpture including medieval pieces in the new opened crypt. The upper floor houses the Museu Sentimental which gives insight into the daily life in Barcelona during the 18th and 19th centuries. Leave a Comment Directions: Along the Carrer dels Comtes

Facade; Casa Quadras-L'Eixample by bpwillet Constructed in 1904 this building was the Barons of Quadras residence. Today it houses the music museum. The architect Puig i Calafalch used an elegant interior design and the exterior of the building, there is extensive use of metalfor the main entrance. The gothic influence here is quite evident. perfectly pretty by yelyah99 OK we didn't actually go into the Museum Frederic Mares. We wanted to be cultural but didn't feel like stumping up the entrance fee. So instead we sat in the courtyard - which was free, peaceful and a perfect little oasis in the middle of the Gothic Quarter. It was a mid-afternoon respite from all the walking. My friend fell asleep on the bench while I took pictures of the orange trees. Also, the museum's cafe in this courtyard is supposed to be very good if you fancy refuelling during your rest stop (Cafe d'Estiu). The Barier.Mueller Museum of Pre-Colombia Art is housed in the medieval Palau Nadal and has been there since 1997. The artefacts come from a collection made by the Swiss business man Josef Mueller (1887 - 1977) and his son-in-law Jean-Paul Barbier. It is not a very big museum but all artworks are from Latin America and dates from 1500BC to the 16th century. In the exhibition there are jewellery, pottery, textiles, stone- and wooden statues and metal objects. Admission was 3 Euro (February 2008). The first Sunday every month admission is free. The museum is open between 11 - 19 on Tuesday to Friday, between 10 - 19 on Saturdays and between 10 - 15 on Sundays and Holidays. My intention was to see the Barbier-Mueller Museum first and then cross the street to visit the Picasso Museum, but the line outside that museum was very long, too long. Egyptian Museum of Barcelona - The Clos Archaeological Foundation The Egyptian Museum is a private collection with almost 1000 items on display. The artefacts are related to daily life in ancient Egypt, the Pharaohs and the religion. It is not the Egyptian Museum in Cairo but it’s absolutely worth a visit if you have any interest in archaeology or the ancient Egypt. Besides the exhibitions the museum has many other activities like courses and cultural events. There is also a library with over 10 000 documents. The museum is open between 10 - 20, Monday - Saturday, and between 10 - 14 on Sundays. Admission was 7 Euro (February 2008). A Big Shirt Outside the Museum by Jetgirly The Textile and Clothing Museum is located in the city center, just off Via Laietana (Metro Jaume 1). It is a small museum spread over three floors, and the collection includes a small-ish selection of textiles, tapestries, lace, clothing and accessories with a heavy leaning towards those of Catalan -> Spanish -> European design. You can be in and out of the museum in forty-five minutes, but because the ticket is a combined ticket that also includes The Decorative Arts Museum and the Ceramics Museum (located in Palau Reial) for a ridiculously low EUR 3.50, it's a good deal for budget-concious travelers.
