Most impressive and most well known of Ciutadella are of course the cascades. A work of art mostly by Manel Fuxá and Venanci Vallmitjana I Barbany with help from apprentice Antoni Gaudi! (1880's). You can take the grand stairs up to the main sculpture and have a good view over the park.

Park Ciutadella is a great place to spend a sunny, warm afternoon. Just bring your picnic blanket and pack a lunch, then sit back and watch the people go by. There are always people playing guitar or dancing, and lots of children and pets going by. My favorite part of the park is the fountain, but make sure you keep checking back until you actually get to see it turned on! You can also grab a coffee from the kiosk near the fountain and relax for a while. If you bring your own balls and paddles, you can play ping-pong in the great outdoors at one of the parks' ping-pong tables! The park is also home to the zoo, the zoological and geological museums, and an art museum / gallery, amongst other things. Leave a Comment

I spent a good hour in this park, wandering around, enjoying nature, art and architecture. I guess you could spend a full day here if you'd also visit the museums and the zoo. It's all so gorgeous, so tranquil. No traffic, but birdsong instead! Some wonderful art as well as some amazing trees (yes, TREES!), some heavy with oranges. This park is definitely a 'must' when visiting Barcelona! The sculptures near the entrance are The Commers and The Industry by Agapit Vallmitjana I Barbany (1883-1905).

After a long stroll in Barri Gotic I wanted to relax for a while and this nice park in the center of the city is ideal because it’s in walking distance. Parc de la Ciutadella is the city’s public park and covers an area of 18 hectares. It is open daily 8.00-20.30 and you can see many locals lying on the grass, under the orange trees or chatting below the big fountain (which is an attraction on its own), There are some lakes also and you can rent a small boat for 30 minutes (it costs 3 euros per person). At the grounds of the park used to be a big castle made by Philippe V’ at 1715 and then turned into a prison. After the demolition of the castle in 1878 turned into a public park and in 1888 housed the Universal Exhibition. There are some museums in the park like the Museu de Zoologia (Zoology museum) which is housed on a building that used for the 1888 Universal Exhibition. It is open Tuesday to Sunday 10.00-15.00. Check also the Museu de Geologia (open Tuesday-Sunday 10.00-15.00) and the Barcelona Zoo (open daily 10.00-19.00 depending on the season). Next to the park you can see the Arc de Triomf at Passeig Lluis Companys. The Arc was the main gate of the Exhibition in 1888 and contains many bolections about arts and industry. Directions: On the edge of Ribera district. Near Barri Gothic, Cathedral Seu and Port Vell. 5’ walk from Barri Gotic. If you come by metro you can stop at Arc de Triomf stop

Parc de la Ciutadella - ornamental cascade by easyoar This park is just behind the Arc de Triomf. It is a popular park with both tourists and locals. Sometimes in the evenings you can find skaters in there, selling various items like ripped off CDs and DVDs. The Park itself is 75 acres and has lots of gardens, a boating lake and lots of citrus trees. There is also a big fountain that was co-designed by Antoni Gaudi (at this point he was an apprentice, so it does not bear many of his hallmarks). The fountain is apparently loosely based on the Trevi Fountain in Rome, although I have to admit that the Trevi fountain is vastly superior! This picture shows the fountain, but with the fountain jets switched off. Leave a Comment

Castle of Three Dragons - Castillo Tres Dragones by spanishguy, 4 more photos There are two museums in the Citadel Park. Both Geology and Zoology Museums merged, forming the current Museum of Natural Science in 2000. The Zoology Museum is housed in the building popularly known as the Three Dragons Castle. It was designed by Domènech i Montaner, who built it as a café-restaurant for the Universal Exhibition 1888. It was constructed on Catalan Gothic and Mudejar architecture, with red bricks, adding decorative elements from Germanic and Almohade architecture. On the other hand, the Geology Museum is a neoclassical building, designed by the architect Rovira i Trias. It was the first building in Barcelona constructed specifically as a museum. It was inaugurated in 1882. The Cascada water fountain. by seamandrew The Cascada is one of Barcelona's most remarkable sites. The monumental fountain and artificial lake, located in the grounds of the Parc de la Ciutadella, were designed by Fontseré in 1875. Both the cascade and the lake were intended to camouflage a huge water deposit in teh central section of the waterfall, which can be reached by two flanking symmetrical stairways. From the top the view of the park is very nice. Curiously, Gaudí worked on this project as a young architectural student. Something of a landmark and meeting place, its plaza in front of it, is often used for concerts, shows or fairs. At least according to the street vendor we bought some water from. Also special are all the water fowl that hang out about the cascade and the lake. They're always fun to see. Leave a Comment Directions: On the edge of Ribera district. Near Barri Gothic, Cathedral Seu and Port Vell.

Lake with rowboats - Lago con barcas de remos by spanishguy, 4 more photos The Citadel Park has been the only park in town during a long time. The King Phillip V (1700-1746) built a citadel in this area as a military fortress in order to control the city against more uprisings, destroying an important part of La Ribera neighbourhood. It was teared down in the mid of 19th century and the park was created. It was the area where the 1888 Universal Exhibition was held. There is a nice lake where you can rent rowboats, an old greenhouse made out of glass, the museums of Zoology and Geology, the Parliament of Catalonia, The Zoo and the Waterfall Park. There is a real scale model of a mammouth made in 1906. Leave a Comment
