Standing rather quietly these days on Plaça Comercial, is the magnificent wrought-iron Mercat del Born. It was designed by Fontseré and Cornet in 1873. The building functioned as Barcelona's central wholesale fruit and vegetable market from 1876 until 1971. It is now being converted into what will be the largest library in the city. There are several good cafés and restaurants along the Plaça Comercial, any of which would make a good stoppoing point and fine place to contemplate the Mercat del Born. Within this large tent is the Mercat de Santa Caterina which is the temporary home of the Market until the new market in La Ribera is completed.
These merchants sell an array of produce and meats. The choices were limitless and at times a bit odd. Here in the states for example, chicken feet are not regularly on a butchers display.

Somewhere just off La Rambla (it's on your right when facing the waterfront), you will find a market - San Josef Market. Fruits as well as seafood and ham are sold there, fresh and inexpensive. The best thing to do would be to bring some back to your residence and cook by yourself, if your place comes with a kitchen.

The name of this square was taken from the ex preident of the Catalan government Mr Francesc Macia.
It is one of the most elegant shopping areas. It is also an important business center of Barcelona.

This market does not have the atmosphere of La Boqueria, but offers some good shopping. It is very easy to find, as it has an almost Gaudi-inspired roof.
The market has a more upmarket feel in one or other way.

Encants Vells is a flea market place where you can find almost everything. It's open on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
